This provision is inadequate
The childminder has failed to complete the process that enables Ofsted to carry out robust checks on the suitability of any individual working at the premises. This places children's welfare at risk. The childminder does not make sure that the premises are secure and cannot be entered by unauthorised persons. The childminder does not ensure that her apprentice has a good understanding of safeguarding issues and understands the procedures that are in place to protect children. The childminder does not ensure that children are appropriately supervised at all times. She does not promote children's understanding of how to stay safe. Teaching is weak. Activities are not tailored to children's individual needs. This means they are not supported to make good progress and become keen learners.
p.1
It has the following strengths
The childminder effectively supports children to learn about diversity through a range of activities and topics. Children have the opportunity to mix with other children and build their confidence when they visit local groups.

What the setting needs to do to improve further
To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage and the Childcare Register the provider must:

Inspection activities
We carried out this inspection as a result of a risk assessment, following information we received about this provider. The inspector conducted a joint observation with the childminder. The inspector asked the childminder and her apprentice questions about their practice at appropriate times throughout the inspection. The inspector looked at children's assessment records. The inspector checked evidence of suitability of all household members and the childminder's qualifications. She also discussed with the childminder how she reflects on her practice to make improvements. The inspector took account of parents' written views on the quality of the provision. The inspector observed activities in the main playroom and looked at other areas used for childminding, including outside.
p.3
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is inadequate
Safeguarding is not effective. The childminder has not informed Ofsted of the details of an apprentice working with children. This means checks to assess their suitability have not been carried out. This compromises children's safety. The childminder does not make sure that her premises are secure and, during the inspection, an individual was able to enter the childminder's home unauthorised. Furthermore, there are times when young children are not adequately supervised to keep them safe. The childminder has a risk assessment in place for her dog, which she implements appropriately. The premises, both inside and outside, are maintained in a clean and hygienic way. The childminder's apprentice has completed online safeguarding training. However, the childminder does not train her apprentice to understand her policies and procedures. The apprentice has poor knowledge of what to do if she is concerned about a child's welfare. Nevertheless, the childminder

ensures that her, her assistant's and the apprentice's first-aid training is up to date.
p.4
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is inadequate
The quality of teaching is poor. The childminder gains some information from parents about what their children can do when they start in her care. This helps her to make some appropriate initial assessments of where children are in their development. However, she does not routinely identify children's next steps in learning. Adult-led activities do not take into account each child's stage of development. Younger children quickly lose interest because activities are too difficult for them. Activities for older children do not help them make the best possible progress because they are mundane. The childminder sends home a record of activities children have taken part in each day to keep parents informed.
p.4
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are inadequate
The weaknesses in leadership and management place children's health, safety and welfare at risk. On occasions, the childminder does not supervise young children carefully enough. For example, she is not aware when they attempt to climb out of low-level seats even though she is close by. This results in them toppling over and bumping their faces. The childminder serves older children with food that needs to be cut up, but does not provide them with appropriate cutlery to do so. The childminder does not promote children's knowledge of how to keep themselves safe. For example, she does not explain to children the importance of sitting down while they are eating. The childminder teaches children some appropriate hygiene routines, such as washing their hands before they eat.
p.4
Outcomes for children are inadequate
Children are not supported to make good progress in their learning. This has a negative impact on their self-esteem and prevents them from becoming confident learners. Nevertheless, younger children enjoy exploring musical instruments and move their body to the sounds they hear. They develop their coordination skills and use small wooden hammers to hit blocks. Older children are introduced to mathematical language, such as half and quarter. Children have access to an outdoor area to help develop their physical skills. In these respects, children develop some of the skills needed to be ready for school.
