Inspection date

Previous inspection date 6 October 2016 7 April 2016

p.1

3

Effectiveness of the leadership and management Requires improvement Quality of teaching, learning and assessment Requires improvement Personal development, behaviour and welfare Requires improvement Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 The records of medication administered to children are incomplete. The childminder does not always obtain permission from parents in writing before administering medication to children.  Younger children are not offered sufficient challenge in all activities to help them to make consistently good progress. Opportunities for younger children to manage tasks for themselves, particularly personal hygiene routines, are not fully supported by the childminder.  The strategies for self-evaluation are not yet fully embedded and weaknesses in the organisation of the provision for children are sometimes missed.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 Since the last inspection, the childminder has made improvements to the arrangements for assessing and planning for children's learning. She plans activities that are based securely around children's interests. Children's sustained concentration and motivation to learn are supported.  The childminder works in close partnership with parents. She gathers information about children's experiences at home when they first attend and throughout their time at the setting.  Children play happily together and their behaviour is positive. They adopt many aspects of a healthy lifestyle. Children enjoy daily opportunities to exercise outdoors in the fresh air.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage and the Childcare Register the provider must:

p.2

Due Date

 obtain written permission from the child's parent and/or carer before administering medicine (both prescribed and non- prescribed) to a child 31/10/2016

p.2

Due Date

 provide younger children with consistently good levels of challenge during all activities and routines to help them to make as much progress as they can. 30/11/2016

p.2

Due Date

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Due Date

 improve the programme of self-evaluation to ensure all requirements are met and continue to drive further improvement in outcomes for children.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed activities and interactions between the childminder and children.  The inspector held discussions with the childminder and children at appropriate times throughout the inspection.  The inspector took account of the views of parents expressed in written testimonials.  The inspector observed an activity and jointly evaluated this with the childminder.  The inspector sampled a range of documentation, including the childminder's self- evaluation record and children's learning records.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement

The childminder has started to use self-evaluation more purposefully and reflects on the quality of most areas of her practice. However, the childminder does not thoroughly evaluate all aspects of the provision and sometimes inconsistencies in documentation are not promptly identified. The childminder has refreshed her safeguarding training since the last inspection. She has appropriate knowledge and understanding of how to identify and report any concerns about a child's welfare. The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. Thorough risk assessments are carried out on a daily basis to minimise hazards to children so that they can play in safety. Children's records of learning are shared with their parents and they are provided with regular updates about their child's progress. Children's continuity of care is promoted.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

The quality of teaching is variable as younger children do not always experience good levels of challenge during activities. There are some missed opportunities for children to manage tasks for themselves. The childminder extends their language appropriately and provides them with suitable opportunities for problem solving. Children build houses from bricks and the childminder encourages them to find out which vehicles they can fit inside. They begin to use mathematical language to explain that some of the cars are too big to go in. Children sustain their concentration as they explore suitable resources and develop their own creative ideas. They make connections between their own experiences and the things they see in pictures. The childminder makes better use of observations and assessment to track children's progress. She is beginning to identify where children may need extra support to move forward in their learning.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

Children's welfare is not fully promoted as the arrangements for administering medication to children are not fully in line with requirements. Although the childminder gathers verbal permission from parents before administering medication to children, their written consent is not always obtained. Children form secure bonds and feel comfortable in the childminder's home. They seek out the childminder for cuddles when they are feeling tired and often invite her into their play scenarios. Children make choices about what they wish to play with. Good behaviour is appropriately encouraged and the childminder is a good role model. Children show concern if their friends are upset by offering them kind words.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Overall, children are not making good progress given their starting points and capabilities. They develop the basic skills they need to be ready for school, although they lack independence during some routines. Children show interest in their surroundings and enjoy finding out about aspects of the wider community during outings. They socialise well with each other and work cooperatively together as they play. Children are increasing their vocabulary and convey their ideas appropriately in conversations with the childminder and each other.
