This provision is good

 The calm and professional childminder cares for children very well. He builds a strong bond with children and follows their home routines closely.  The childminder has a secure understanding and knowledge of how to support the learning and development of young children. Children make good progress.  The childminder works successfully with his co-childminder to devise effective safeguarding and welfare procedures which they implement together.  The childminder has strong leadership skills. He takes lead responsibility for self- evaluation and improvement, which is continuous and is successful in improving standards at the newly registered co-childminder setting.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The play and learning activities for expressive art and design lack a wide range of sensory activities, particularly for children under two years.  The planning and delivery of activities which are led by adults are not highly effective in supporting the best possible learning outcomes for all children.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 extend opportunities for children to experience a wide range of activities, including those which extend children's sensory play  consider ways to improve the planning and delivery of activities led by adults so that all children gain the best possible learning opportunities and outcomes.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed children's play activities, and went for a walk with the childminder and his co-childminder.  The inspector undertook a joint observation with the childminder.  The inspector held discussions with the childminder about the children and looked at their learning records.  The inspector sampled some safeguarding and leadership documentation.  The inspector gained written and verbal feedback from parents.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder understands his responsibility to follow local procedures to address any concerns about children's welfare, including vulnerable children at risk of strong views. He supervises children closely to keep them safe and implements policies that protect their welfare, such as those relating to the use of mobile phones and fire safety. The childminder takes on board information he receives at training events, such as those relating to child attachment, to ensure his knowledge is consistently increasing. The childminder has a collaborative approach to working with parents to meet children's needs successfully. Parents are full of praise for the setting.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder knows children well and provides them with purposeful learning opportunities, which engage their interest. He has a good grasp of the different learning areas and supports children through a balance of activities which they choose for themselves and those led by an adult. For example, children explore a range of musical instruments and are encouraged to join in well-known rhymes and songs. The childminder supports children's mathematical skills. For example, he counts during play activities and encourages children to identify numerals in the environment when out on walks.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder develops a good understanding of children as individuals and responds quickly to children's needs, such as giving them cuddles when upset. Children respond extremely well to the good care and attention they receive. The childminder gathers a wide range of information from parents about children when they start, and continually shares details about their children's care and learning with them. The childminder provides a clean, bright and welcoming environment that motivates children's learning. He supports good behaviour through very clear and calm explanatory guidance which children respond to well. Children are very happy, smile and thrive on his praise and encouragement.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

All children learn a range of skills to prepare them for the next stage in life. They make good levels of progress in relation to their individual starting points. For example, toddlers attempt to post shapes into a shape sorter and develop problem-solving skills. Children enjoy looking at books and are focused listeners. They ask questions and engage in simple conversations with the childminder. They respond to questions linked to a book about potty training. Two-year-olds are encouraged to observe and talk about the world around them, such as the dragonflies they see on the visits to the park.
