This provision is good

 Children make good progress from their starting points. The childminder provides good- quality activities which support children's learning well.  The childminder gathers the views of the parents and children. She successfully uses these views to shape the service she provides. For example, after feedback from parents, the childminder taught children about road safety.  The childminder teaches children effectively about their safety and behaviour. For example, she teaches children about the danger of bonfires. The childminder helps the children to think about what they are doing and to learn what acceptable behaviour is. Children behave well.  The childminder takes every opportunity to help children to settle in well. She gives cuddles of reassurance to children to help build their confidence.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not extend children's mathematical development as well as she does for other areas of learning.  The childminder does not encourage younger children to explore and develop their senses fully as they play.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 increase daily opportunities for children to extend their mathematical development  take every opportunity to extend younger children's sensory development during play.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed children playing in the main play area.  The inspector spoke with the childminder at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector sampled documents, including children's files and safeguarding policies and procedures.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a clear understanding of child protection, and what procedures to take if she has any concerns over children's welfare. The childminder keeps up to date with training and any changes to legislation. She successfully uses research to help her provide good-quality activities to support children's learning and development. For instance, she recently carried out training on tracking children's learning and development. This has helped her to monitor children's learning and identify areas to work on next. The childminder works in good partnership with other professionals that care for children. For example, she shares children's next steps and stages of learning with the nurseries they attend. This helps to provide good continuity of care and learning.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder carries out detailed assessments, which help her to identify what children need to do next. She gathers information from parents about children's interests and what they like doing at home, to plan exciting and enjoyable activities. For example, she builds on children's interest in books and uses this to teach them about the wider world and support their language development.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder supports children's physical development effectively. For instance, she encourages younger children to have tummy time, to help with their core muscle development. Older children develop their physical skills. For example, they take different sized pompoms in and out of a bottle. Children learn to value others. For example, they learn how to say words in other children's home languages.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are gaining the necessary skills to move on to the next stage of their learning and subsequent move to school. Children learn about animals, such as hedgehogs, and talk about what they look like and where they live. Children develop good creative and language skills. Their personal and social development is good. Children gain in confidence and are motivated to learn.
