Children make good progress in her care.  The childminder has built effective relationships with parents and others involved in looking after the children. She shares information about children to ensure they have consistency in their care and learning.  Self-evaluation and the childminder's reflection about her practice are realistic. She seeks the views of parents and children when she considers developments and improvements.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Sometimes the childminder misses opportunities during children's play to build on their mathematical development.  Children, at times, cannot access all the resources in the learning environment and make fully independent choices in their play.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 make better use of everyday play situations and daily routines to further extend children's understanding and enjoyment of mathematics  review the organisation of resources and the environment to enhance opportunities for all children to select resources independently.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the childminder and children as they played, and spoke to them at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector viewed areas of the house and garden used for childminding.  The inspector sampled documentation including suitability checks, children's records and a selection of written policies.  The inspector took note of parents' written views.  The inspector held discussions with the childminder in relation to observations of the children's play, learning and progress.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good knowledge of keeping children safe and the actions to take if she has any concerns about children's welfare. The childminder ensures she stays up to date with changes in early years education. She uses her childcare qualification and experience to provide a good-quality setting. The childminder has a range of policies to help support children's safety and well-being. She works closely with parents, for example, using sticker charts to encourage the children's positive behaviour.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder makes good use of observations and assessments to accurately monitor children's individual progress. She plans activities to challenge individual children and support their learning and development. Children enjoy a range of creative activities. For example, children have the opportunity to explore and experiment with glue and glitter. Children have opportunities to learn about the natural world. For example, they visit the nearby beach. The childminder supports children's communication and language skills well. For instance, they listen carefully to boats on the sea and make animal sounds as they play. Children are interested and engaged in their play for sustained periods of time.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder encourages children to follow simple rules and boundaries to keep themselves safe. For example, children learn to climb the steps up to the slide and sit at the top. The childminder praises children, raising their confidence and self-esteem. The childminder supports children's persistence in their activities. For example, she encourages children to try again as they struggle to build with bricks. The childminder teaches children about healthy lifestyles. For example, they enjoy a range of nutritious meals and snacks, and delight in the many opportunities for energetic play in the fresh air. Children behave well. They form strong attachments to the childminder and readily seek reassurance when needed.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children acquire a range of skills they may need when they move on to school. Children learn to handle books carefully and enjoy sharing stories, which help to support their early reading skills. They learn the sounds that letters make, how to share resources and take turns. They learn to manage their personal care skills and the importance of good hygiene. Children make good progress from their starting points.
