p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not make the most of opportunities to help young children to talk about themselves and people that are important to them.  Although partnerships with parents are good, the childminder does not consistently share ideas with parents to strengthen children's ongoing learning and development at home.

p.2

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The enthusiastic childminder is well organised and professional. She maintains all of the required documentation to a good standard. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder attends various child protection training courses to maintain her good understanding of how to safeguard children. The childminder establishes effective partnerships with other people that are involved in the children's lives to further complement their early education. She places a strong focus on assessing children's progress to narrow any gaps in their achievement and to challenge their learning further.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder uses effective teaching skills. She provides a stimulating environment and knows the children well. For example, she chats to children about what they are doing, makes suggestions and demonstrates tasks to extend their play. Good quality toys and resources are easily accessible to children and they are keen and motivated as they initiate their learning. The childminder also plans activities based on her assessment of children's progress and interests. This helps children to engage and concentrate further during activities.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder has high expectations for behaviour, which children respond to positively. Children behave well. They learn to take turns and share, and are polite and courteous. The childminder places a strong emphasis on helping children to learn to keep safe. For example, children participate in emergency evacuation drills. The childminder teaches children the importance of keeping fit. For example, they develop good physical skills as they dance, climb, slide and balance on apparatus. The childminder encourages children to follow good hygiene routines to support their health. Children develop an understanding of other people's beliefs by, for example, learning about different festivals.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children develop good speaking and listening skills. For example, they have time to think and respond to questions the childminder asks. Children enjoy books and a wide variety of stories. They explore letters and the sounds they make. Children have fun developing their mathematical skills, which are linked to their interests. For example, during a treasure hunt, children enjoyed finding gold coins to match with corresponding numbers on the pirates. Children are independent, for example, they learn to dress and undress, feed themselves, and choose toys and resources. Children are well prepared for future learning and their eventual move on to school.
