p.1
This provision is inadequate
The childminder does not hold a current paediatric first-aid certificate. The childminder does not have knowledge of the Local Safeguarding Children Board procedures. She is not able to identify the required action to be taken if an allegation is made against adults living in the household or how to ensure the safe use of mobile phones and cameras in her setting. The partnerships with other early years settings that children attend are not effective with regard to sharing information and promoting continuity of learning for individual children. The childminder does not evaluate her practice well enough to identify strengths and areas for improvement. This contributes to the weakness of the provision.
p.1
It has the following strengths
Children are happy in the childminder's care and relationships are good. Children make good progress in their mathematical development. They spontaneously use mathematical language while they play. Children's independence is supported effectively by the childminder. The childminder encourages children to hear the initial sounds in words and they are beginning to link letters with the sounds they represent. Children enjoy playing with magnetic letters and numbers and the childminder challenges them to find the first letter in their own name.

What the setting needs to do to improve further
To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage and the Childcare Register the provider must:

Inspection activities
The inspector observed activities as children played in the indoor play area. The inspector observed an activity and discussed teaching methods with the childminder. The inspector looked at evidence of the childminder's qualification and training and checked evidence of the suitability of all adults. The inspector looked at a selection of children's assessment records and planning, policies and procedures and a range of other documentation. The inspector spoke with the childminder and children at appropriate times throughout the inspection.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is inadequate
The arrangements for safeguarding are not effective. The childminder does not hold a current paediatric first-aid certificate and has not taken action to renew her training in a timely manner. She is not aware of the current local procedures to follow if she is concerned about a child's welfare. Her procedures for safeguarding children do not identify the use of mobile phones and cameras or procedures if an allegation is made against herself or her family. Nonetheless, she is aware of the signs of abuse and neglect that would cause her concerns about a child. The childminder conducts a risk assessment of her home and potential risks are identified and appropriately addressed. Required suitability checks for family members aged 16 years and over have been completed. The childminder has not developed effective procedures for reviewing her provision in order to identify priorities for improvement. She identifies that in the past she has been able to rely

on representatives of the local authority to share information about early years issues. The childminder has not kept her knowledge up to date and does not ensure that all welfare requirements are met. The childminder communicates appropriately with parents about children's learning and development.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement
The childminder observes, assesses and plans for children's future learning. However, links with other early years settings are not strong enough to ensure that information about learning is shared and children make best progress. The childminder supports children's thinking skills and language development well, giving children time to put their thoughts into words when she asks them questions. They talk about birthdays and the childminder supports them in sorting numerals and finding the one that represents their age. Children identify other children who are bigger or smaller than themselves.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are inadequate
Weaknesses in leadership and management regarding the failure to keep paediatric first- aid training and knowledge of local safeguarding procedures up to date compromises children's overall welfare and safety. However, children are happy and confident in the childminder's care. They develop an understanding of dangers and how to keep themselves safe, such as how to climb up and down the stairs safely. Children understand and adopt good hygiene practices and they eat healthy food. They practise physical skills while using challenging equipment at the park. Children are aware of expectations for behaviour, such as helping to tidy toys away. The childminder boosts children's self- esteem as she praises their positive behaviour.
p.3
Outcomes for children require improvement
Children's learning builds satisfactorily on what they already know and can do, and they reach expected levels of development. Older children gain basic skills to prepare them for school. However, they are not making best possible progress as partnership working is not sufficiently addressed. Children manage their self-care needs well. They represent their feelings in the pictures of faces that they paint. Pre-school children are learning to distinguish between letters and numerals.
