This provision is good

 The childminder observes and assesses the children regularly and monitors their development effectively, to help identify concerns and plan effectively for their learning. Children make good progress towards the next stages in their learning.  The childminder provides a wide range of resources that help stimulate children's curiosity to explore. Children learn to make independent choices and they freely follow their interests in play. The childminder encourages their efforts and enthusiastically joins in their play, which helps build on children's confidence and enjoyment.  The childminder helps children learn to wait and take turns during play. This helps them build on their early understanding of the needs of others.  The childminder completes self-evaluation effectively. For example, she seeks the views of the local authority improvement advisers, parents and children to help identify the strengths and weaknesses of her provision. Improvement action is successful. She

ensures good standards in children's learning and care.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Although the childminder models hygiene routines, she misses some opportunities to help children learn to adopt these consistently.  The childminder misses some opportunities to help children build on their early counting skills.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

 provide consistent opportunities for children to build further on their understanding of hygiene practices  strengthen opportunities for children to build on their early counting skills.

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a clear understanding of the procedures to follow to report child protection issues in line with her Local Safeguarding Children Board guidelines. She understands what action to take if she is concerned that children are being exposed to extreme views. The childminder is keen to improve her knowledge and skills. For example, she attends training to help understand ways to improve opportunities for specific groups of children, such as those who have special educational needs or disability. She shares a range of policies and procedures with parents and provides them with regular updates of their children's progress and the activities they enjoy. This helps to enable parents to continue children's learning at home.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder is efficient and makes best use of children's play to help guide their learning in a range of ways. For example, when children display interest in imaginative play, she helps them set up a tea party with electronic toys. Children learn to follow recorded messages, such as 'can I have some tea please', and they pretend to pour out tea. She skilfully helps them build on their early understanding of technology and their communication skills through a range of enjoyable play experiences. She provides interesting opportunities for young children to build on their self-awareness. For example, she shares a picture book with them and introduces them to the different parts of the baby's face. She stimulates them to build further on their experiences, for example, she provides the opportunity for them to look into a mirror and point to their own body parts.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder is encouraging and she praises children for their efforts and achievements. This helps children to build on their confidence in their own abilities. Children form trusting relationships with the childminder. This has a positive effect on their emotional well-being. For example, they approach her for a cuddle when they feel sleepy and she recognises their need and settles them to sleep. Children explore a range of physical skills. For example, they learn to stack blocks during a construction activity, which helps build on their hand-to-eye coordination.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Young children display a keen interest to explore musical instruments. For example, they explore the electronic guitar and the drums and they move their bodies to music. They develop their early understanding of sizes and measures, for example, they explore climbing in and out of enclosed spaces. Children investigate and experiment eagerly, to help develop their understanding of the world around them. They develop a good range of skills that support their progress and prepare them for the move to school.
