This provision is good
The childminder has a secure knowledge and understanding of how children learn through play. This helps her to plan effectively for each child's next steps in learning. She makes precise assessments of their progress through regular and detailed observations. Any gaps in children's learning are closed quickly as a result. The childminder knows children well and plans activities based on their individual interests. This helps to engage them in their play and learning and to maintain their interest. She obtains some information from parents about what children know and can do. The childminder uses this, along with her own initial assessments, to establish clear starting points for their learning. Children are happy and settled in the family environment with the childminder and her two co-childminders. Children learn to share and take turns and form close friendships with each other. The childminder shares ideas and good practice with her co-childminders and other

early years professionals. She identifies areas for improvement in the provision and maintains her professional development effectively.

It is not yet outstanding because:
The childminder has not yet found successful ways to engage all parents in their children's learning. The childminder does not always reflect on her practice effectively to identify ways to enhance her teaching even further.

What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

Inspection activities
The inspector observed activities in the childminder's home, both inside and in the garden. The inspector spoke to the childminder, her two co-childminders and children at appropriate times during the inspection. The inspector looked at a selection of policies and children's records. The inspector jointly observed and discussed with the childminder the teaching and learning activities provided. The inspector checked evidence of the childminder's suitability. The inspector took account of the views of parents, carers and children, including those expressed in recent letters.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
Arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder understands the procedures to follow in order to keep children safe. She knows how to identify and report a concern about a child or an allegation against her. The premises are safe and secure and she supervises children well. The childminder works closely with her two co-childminders to monitor children's progress and plan how they can meet children's individual needs. She shares information with the other settings that children attend. This ensures information about their well-being is shared and their learning is complemented. The childminder is well qualified and strives to provide good quality care and learning for children.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder teaches children to recognise written letters and their sounds. She helps them to find the initial letters of their names and those of the other children. She finds out which systems local nurseries use so that children will be familiar with some of these when they move on. Children are enthusiastic and use the picture clues and action songs to help them remember the sounds. Younger children watch and copy older children's actions, helping them to learn. Two-year-old children enjoy dancing during a musical game. The childminder helps them to match the flat shapes on the floor to the ones on the cards her co-childminder holds up. She holds their hands and encourages them to move in time to the music so they gain confidence.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
Children's behaviour is excellent and they form close friendships with each other. They enjoy healthy snacks and meals and they grow fruit and vegetables in the childminder's garden. This helps children to learn about healthy foods and where they come from. The childminder encourages shy children to gain confidence through feeding the guinea pig. She praises children and talks to them about what the pet eats and which bits he doesn't like. Children enjoy outdoor play each day and extend their physical development during their visits to the park. The childminder meets children's needs well so that they are comfortable and secure.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children are enthusiastic learners. They concentrate well during an activity in which they identify letters and sounds. Younger children learn as they watch three- and four-year-old children perform the actions that match the sounds. They copy these and join in with the songs and point to the correct letter when they are asked. This helps them to develop their early literacy skills well. Children learn to be independent in readiness for nursery and school. They make their own sandwiches and learn good social skills as they chat over lunch. They are interested in what other children have to say and they have good manners.
