This provision is good

 The childminder helps children to make good progress in their learning from their starting points.  The childminder reflects on her practice and she works closely with parents and the children to review the service she provides. She successfully uses any information she gathers to help shape her service. For example, the childminder provided different resources to help support children's physical development, as requested.  Children are happy and settled. They develop good relationships with the childminder, and she successfully helps to build their self-esteem and confidence. For example, she praises children well for turn taking and sharing.  The childminder is consistent in her approach to behaviour management. She teaches children the importance of understanding what is right and what is wrong. Children behave well.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Occasionally, background noise results in children having slightly less opportunity to hear and respond to the childminder as they play.  The childminder does not always take all opportunities to fully engage children in some activities, to fully encourage their learning at such times.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 enable children to concentrate, listen and respond during their everyday experiences, to build on their language and communication skills.  review the resources available to children to help them to settle at activities and build on their learning and development.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed children in the main play areas.  The inspector spoke with the childminder at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector reviewed documents, including those used by the childminder to safeguard children.  The inspector spoke with the childminder about how she assesses the quality of activities.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a strong understanding of child protection issues. She is fully aware of the procedures to follow if she has any concerns regarding children's welfare. The childminder carries out detailed risk assessments to provide a safe learning environment for children. She completes the required documents to help to keep children safe and to support their welfare. The childminder continually develops her knowledge in a variety of ways to improve her skills. She also receives support from the local early years team and uses any information gained to help her to improve her practice.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder makes good use of her knowledge of children's interests. She successfully uses the information gained to help plan good-quality activities and enhance children's learning and development. The childminder uses short sentences and simple questions to encourage children's communication and language skills. She works closely with other professionals caring for the children. They share children's stages of development and next steps needed in learning to help the children progress well. The childminder accurately tracks children's development to identify and close any gaps in their learning. She offers additional help where children require extra support to help them catch up in their learning.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder teaches children how to keep themselves safe. For example, children learn how to care for the childminder's dogs and know not to shout or jump near them. Children enjoy a good amount of resources that help to support their physical development. For example, children learn how to move in different ways through play tunnels. The childminder provides children with a balanced diet and good opportunities to learn about healthy lifestyles. Children have healthy snacks and learn to sit down as they eat. Children develop good levels of independence. They learn how to make their own sandwiches at mealtimes.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are gaining the confidence to progress to the next stages of their learning and the subsequent move to school. They develop good language skills and learn new words; for example, as they sing songs with the childminder and older children. Young children are starting to develop good mathematical skills. For example, they learn about numbers as they count different coloured balls.
