This provision is good
The childminder works very closely with parents. She provides regular and frequent opportunities to involve them in their children's learning. Parents are encouraged to share information about their children's achievements, which helps the childminder to plan relevant learning opportunities. The childminder carries out regular observations of children's play. She plans activities and learning experiences that are relevant to children's interests and stage of learning. For example, the childminder links a story to the children's interest in wild animals. The childminder is keen to develop and extend her knowledge, skills and practice. For instance, she completes training and seeks support from the local authority to help her improve further. Children make good progress typical for their age in all areas of learning. They engage well in their learning. The childminder understands how to plan activities appropriate to

their skills, interests and abilities. For example, she uses counting activities to support children's mathematical development.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
The childminder does not provide children with a wide enough range of opportunities to explore technology and how things work. The childminder does not make the most of opportunities to challenge children's learning to help them extend their understanding further.

What the setting needs to do to improve further

Inspection activities
The inspector checked evidence of safeguarding knowledge and procedures. The inspector spent time observing interactions between the childminder and the children, and held discussions regarding their progress. The inspector viewed a sample of the childminder's documents, including policies and children's records. The inspector looked at the premises used for childminding. The inspector discussed how the childminder evaluates her practice.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
The childminder keeps parents informed and involved in their children's learning. For example, she shares development records and provides daily diaries and discussions to help parents support their children's learning at home. The childminder accurately evaluates her practice. She makes changes to help improve the learning environment for children, such as introducing a washing line with pegs to support children's fine-motor skills. The childminder maintains clear records that track children's progress from their starting points. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder understands the signs that would cause concern regarding the children's welfare or safety. She has a detailed safeguarding policy and knows the procedures to follow.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder provides a calm and welcoming environment where children move around freely and with confidence. The childminder supports children's vocabulary and communication development well. She speaks and listens carefully to children. For example, she repeats words back to children to model the correct pronunciation. Children practise their early language skills and enjoy joining in with familiar nursery rhymes and songs. Children regularly visit and learn about their local community. For example, the childminder plans outings to the local library and groups. The childminder knows the children very well. She carefully plans the learning environment both inside and outside. This helps children to make independent choices and lead their play.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
Children learn about other people, cultures and diversity in the world around them. For example, the childminder plans activities that help children to learn about the differences and similarities between different cultures and customs. The childminder has a consistent approach to helping children learn boundaries and rules. For example, she reminds children to take their shoes off when indoors. Children learn about healthy lifestyles and enjoy nutritious meals and snacks. They are confident and have good levels of self- esteem.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children make good progress typical for their age. They develop skills that prepare them for the next stage of their learning and their eventual move to school. For example, they regularly practise their early writing skills using a variety of resources and make marks on paper.
