Effectiveness of the leadership and management Requires improvement Quality of teaching, learning and assessment Requires improvement Personal development, behaviour and welfare Requires improvement Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 The childminder does not carry out the required progress check for children aged two years. She does not provide parents with a written summary of their children's achievements or any identified gaps in their development.  The childminder does not consistently gather information about children's development from staff at other settings children attend, to help provide continuity in their learning.  The childminder does not reflect on her practice effectively. She has not identified areas for improvements in her practice to support children's care and learning.  The childminder does not provide children with easy access to writing resources to encourage them to practise making marks to enhance their early writing skills.  The childminder does not build on children's creativity. For example, she does not regularly encourage them to express themselves through art, craft and design.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 The childminder is kind and caring and provides a welcoming environment for children. Children settle in well and feel emotionally secure in her care. They behave well.  The childminder encourages children to use a range of technology resources for different purposes. For example, children enjoy making music.  The childminder helps children who speak English as an additional language to hear and use their home languages in their play. Children make steady progress in their learning and development.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage the provider must:

p.2

Due Date

 improve understanding of and complete the progress check for children aged between two and three years, and provide parents with a written summary. 07/11/2016

p.2

Due Date

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Due Date

 improve partnerships with other settings that children attend to enhance information sharing about children's level of development, to support a consistent approach to their learning and development  use self-evaluation more effectively to identify and work on areas for development to improve practice and the outcomes for children  create more opportunities for children to practise making marks during their play to build on their early writing skills  extend children's creativity with more frequent opportunities to express their ideas through a wider range of arts and crafts materials.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector toured the areas of the premises that children use.  The inspector and the childminder evaluated the effectiveness of an activity together.  The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector spoke with the childminder at appropriate times during the inspection. She reviewed a range of documentation, including policies and children's records.  The inspector reviewed written feedback from parents and took account of their views.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement

The childminder does not evaluate her practice successfully to identify and improve weaknesses. She does not meet all statutory requirements. For example, the childminder does not complete the required progress check for children aged two years or provide parents with a written summary of their children's development, as required. Nonetheless, the childminder knows how to report concerns about a child's welfare. She risk assesses her home and places she takes children to and ensures that she removes any potential hazards. The childminder meets with other childminders to share ideas and update her skills. She completes training to help keep children safe. Safeguarding is effective.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

The childminder does not monitor children's progress well enough to help her identify and close any less obvious gaps in their learning. She does not organise all her resources well. For example, children cannot easily reach resources that help to develop their early writing skills. In addition, she does not enhance children's creativity, for instance, by providing a wide range of arts and crafts materials. Nevertheless, she joins with children during play and gives them plenty of time to complete a range of tasks. For example, she encourages children to problem solve and find the correct shape to fit into a matching hole. She helps children to become confident talkers. For example, she teaches older children to listen to the sounds in new words, and younger children enjoy making sounds that animals make.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

The childminder does not provide parents with the required information about children's development or work closely with professionals at other settings children attend. Children do not receive a consistent approach to support their learning and development. However, children benefit from the childminder's caring attention, which helps them feel safe and secure. She gives children plenty of affection and they approach her for cuddles. The childminder helps children learn to develop a healthy lifestyle. For example, she provides healthy food and children play and learn in the fresh air. The childminder helps children to develop physical skills, such as to climb and balance. She teaches children about the diverse world and differences between them and other people.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Children do not practise their early writing skills or have opportunities to use their ideas creatively. However, they learn some skills in readiness for school. For example, they manage tasks, such as taking their coats off, and they follow good hygiene practices. Children know how to keep safe. For example, they are aware of traffic and learn to walk safely during the school run. Children are respectful, share resources and develop friendships.
