This provision is good

 Partnerships with parents are successful. The childminder shares information on policies and procedures, as well as keeping parents well informed of children's care routines and learning. This helps to support children's welfare and their learning at home.  The childminder supports children's language and communication skills well. For example she models words correctly and introduces new vocabulary to describe what children are doing. This helps them to form firm foundations for their future learning.  Children are consistently encouraged to try things out for themselves and are motivated to persist when challenges occur. They become independent and develop their self- confidence ready for the next stages in their development.  Children form secure, warm and nurturing relationships with the childminder, which supports their emotional well-being effectively.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 There are limited opportunities for children to take part in activities that help them to learn about the natural world.  The childminder attends training to keep her knowledge up to date but does not make the most of opportunities to continually enhance her practices to the highest possible level.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 extend opportunities for children to explore and learn about the natural world  target professional development more effectively to refine and extend care and teaching practices as well as possible.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector looked around the areas used for childminding.  The inspector observed a range of play activities and care routines and spoke to the childminder about the children's learning and development.  The inspector looked at a sample of documents, including registers of attendance, policies and procedures, parents' comments and children's assessment records.  The inspector held discussions with the childminder about the systems she uses to observe children, record their development and plan for the next steps in their learning.  The inspector talked to the childminder about how she evaluates her provision.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder has a secure knowledge of the requirements of the early years foundation stage. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder understands the steps to follow to support children's welfare and protect them from harm. The childminder reviews the effectiveness of the provision by observing and consulting the children and adapting activities to meet their individual needs. She also seeks feedback from parents to help identify areas for improvement. The childminder monitors children's progress effectively to ensure they progress well.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder teaches children well. She has a good understanding of how children develop and uses her skills to motivate them in their learning. The childminder follows children's interests and plans a good range of stimulating and challenging activities, which children thoroughly enjoy. For example, she supports children's interest in farm animals through stories, songs and games. She carefully checks the children's progress through her observations and plans interesting activities that focus on what they need to learn next. The childminder supports children's mathematical development well. For example, children learn about volume and capacity as they fill containers of varying sizes with dried pasta.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children are very happy and settled in the childminder's care. The childminder provides a relaxed and homely environment where children develop a sense of belonging. The childminder promotes children's good health effectively. For example, she provides daily opportunities for outdoor play, where children develop their physical skills. She consults with parents on nutrition so that children have healthy and well-balanced meals and snacks. The childminder uses plenty of praise and positive comments to encourage children's good behaviour. Children respond well to her calm and consistent approach. For example, they need very little encouragement to tidy away resources after play.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress from their starting points and develop positive attitudes to learning. They develop their independence and personal skills, for example, they wash their hands before eating and select their own choice of fruit at snack time. Children are confident in exploring technology and their all-round development is supported effectively in readiness for their future learning.
