This provision is good

 The childminder, overall, demonstrates effective teaching skills. She is particularly skilled at supporting children to develop their communication and language. She uses her observations of children's interests to motivate them and extend their learning. Children make good progress in all areas of development.  The childminder engages in regular professional development opportunities. She works alongside other childcare professionals and accesses purposeful training. She is a reflective practitioner and regularly adapts her practice based on her improved skills and knowledge.  Partnerships with parents are good. A regular two-way flow of information is used to support children's emotional well-being and development. Parents contribute to assessments and are well supported to extend their child's learning at home.  The childminder is caring and nurturing, and children have developed good bonds with

her. She adapts care routines according to children's individual needs and supports them to become independent from a young age. For example, young children readily hang their own coats up as they come in and help to gather items for nappy changing.  The childminder is a positive role model. She uses good manners and regularly praises children, celebrating their achievements with a genuine excitement. Children know the routine well and their behaviour is good in relation to their age.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Sometimes, the childminder does not fully support children to think through and solve simple problems for themselves.  Information gathered from good assessments is not always used sharply enough when planning activities to help children to make even more rapid progress in their learning.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

 enhance teaching skills and focus on ways that help children's problem-solving skills be supported more effectively  make even better use of already good assessment information to plan even more precisely and help children to make further and more rapid progress.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors, and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector observed a planned activity and jointly evaluated it with the childminder.  The inspector had a tour of the parts of the childminder's home used for childminding.  The inspector looked at relevant documentation, such as a children's records, a sample of policies and procedures, and evidence of suitability of the adults living on the premises and regular visitors.  The inspector viewed written feedback provided by parents prior to the inspection and took account of their views.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder is extremely passionate about her role. She is dedicated to improving her service and regularly identifies key areas to target, taking into account the views of children and parents. The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder is extremely vigilant and ensures that she provides a safe environment for children. She assesses potential risks to children on outings and considers ways to minimise these. The childminder has a good understanding of the potential indicators of abuse and knows how to respond appropriately in the event of a concern about a child's safety or welfare. She teaches very young children how to keep themselves safe. For example, young children already know to stop at some small steps in the garden and hold their hand out for assistance. The childminder monitors children's progress, generally, well. She demonstrates a good understanding of how to work with external agencies, if required.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Children love to explore books. They seek out the childminder to share favourite stories and engage well. They point to the pictures with interest and turn the pages as the childminder reads. She talks clearly and slowly, and encourages children to copy words. This helps to develop children's communication, language and early literacy skills. The childminder engages children in song and rhyme times. Children delight as they pretend to be asleep on the floor and then jump up and down at appropriate parts in the song. The childminder uses children's love of puppets to enhance learning opportunities. She talks to children about animal names and children make animals sounds as they use their hands to imaginatively move the puppets. The childminder makes use of every opportunity, including care routines, to support early mathematics. She encourages children to count, recognise shapes and copy mathematical language, such as on top and behind.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder's home is welcoming and well organised. Children benefit from a dedicated playroom. They move around the house with confidence, accessing their own choice of high-quality toys and resources. Children love to explore the garden. They have ample opportunities to develop essential physical skills, as well as getting plenty of fresh air. Children choose from a variety of fruits for snack and they are provided with healthy and nutritious meals. They engage in positive hygiene routines and the childminder talks to them about the importance of washing their hands before eating. This helps to support children's healthy lifestyles and contributes to their physical well-being. The childminder takes children on regular outings to local parks and to weekly groups. These provide them with opportunities to socialise with children of their own age.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are working within the expected age bands for their age. They are well prepared for their next stage in learning. They concentrate and persevere at tasks of their own choosing. They are eager and motivated to learn and excited when new activities are presented for them. They show pride in their achievements and clap when they succeed, for example, after successfully placing a wooden shape in a hole in a box.
