Inspection activities

 The inspector discussed the organisation and management of the childminding service with the childminder.  The inspector looked at areas of the home used by children in relation to their health and safety.  The inspector and childminder observed children and discussed children's learning.  The inspector sampled the childminder's written observations and assessments.  The inspector read letters from parents to take account of their views on the service they receive.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder teaches children how to identify risks and keep themselves safe. For example, she encourages them to help tidy up before getting out new resources to minimise trip hazards. The childminder evaluates her provision effectively. She constantly reflects on her practice to ensure that the service she provides meets the needs of children and families. For instance, she asks parents to comment on the services by completing questionnaires. The childminder keeps her skills and knowledge updated. For example, she carries out research as well as meeting regularly with other professionals to share ideas and best practice. The childminder monitors children's learning to identify and implement any additional support they need.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder has a well-developed knowledge and understanding of how children learn through play. Children make good progress in their speech development. The childminder is skilled in helping them with their communication and language. For example, she uses commentary and skilful questions that challenge children to think and encourage them to speak. Children have opportunities to investigate and explore using a variety of textures to develop their senses. For instance they enjoy 'squidging' the marshmallows. Children benefit from trips to the library and shops, to learn about their community and the world around them.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder is a good role model for children. She reinforces positive behaviour through praise and encouragement. Children are settled and display a strong sense of belonging. The childminder has clear rules and behaviour boundaries, which help children learn how to manage their emotions. Children learn how to share and take turns, for instance, they take turns with the shakers while singing along to nursery rhymes. Children regularly attend a variety of children's groups, to support their personal, social and emotional development. This helps children learn about and begin to respect the needs of others. The childminder provides children with healthy meals and regularly updates their individual routines to provide continuity of care.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress from their starting points. Children are confident, independent learners who are eager to engage with the range of resources offered. For instance, they enjoy naming the shapes on the clock puzzle to develop their mathematical language. Overall, children are well prepared for the next stage in their learning and eventual move to school.
