 Children are confident communicators. For example, they engage in enjoyable activities that encourage them to think, such as question and answer, describing and guessing games.  The childminder regularly evaluates and reviews her practice with clear plans for improvements. She keeps up to date with new ideas to help engage and motivate children in their play experiences. For example, she carries out research online.  Children have good opportunities to use their imagination. For example, they enjoy role play and dressing up in a wide variety of costumes.  The childminder is a positive role model. For instance, she encourages children to resolve minor disagreements themselves and compromise. Children behave well, and are polite and kind to each other.  There is a good link with the school that children attend. The childminder complements children's learning well and offers a positive consistency of care. For example, she

It is not yet outstanding because:

 On occasions, the childminder does not extend opportunities for children to develop their interest in reading materials.  The childminder does not fully extend children's enjoyment in using technology.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 extend opportunities for children to develop their interest in reading and recognising printed words.  extend children's experiences and enjoyment further as they use technology.

Inspection activities

 The inspector viewed the areas of the childminder's home that children use.  The inspector observed the childminder interacting with the children.  The inspector sampled written documentation that the childminder uses, including children's records, and policies and procedures.  The inspector spoke to children and the childminder at convenient times and gathered the views of parents.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder establishes positive partnership with parents. She keeps them fully informed of their children's day. For example, she shares relevant information from the school and talks about their time at her setting. This helps provide a consistent approach to children's care and meets their individual needs well. The childminder shows a commitment to continuing to develop her confidence and skills further. For example, she networks with other childminders and attends online workshops. She uses new information effectively to make positive changes to her practice. For instance, children now have good opportunities to understand other people's differences and similarities. For example, they celebrate festivals from around the world. The childminder has a good knowledge and understanding of the safeguarding policies and procedures, and how to protect children's welfare. She knows who to contact to follow up any concerns. Children

participate in activities that require a level of maturity. For example, they practise and understand how to evacuate the building quickly in the event of an emergency. Safeguarding is effective.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder knows the children well. She takes their interests into consideration when planning activities. For example, children have an active role in their play and like to take the lead. They share ideas of what they wish to do and choose their own resources. The childminder respects children's wishes. This encourages children to settle quickly, and feel valued and listened to. The childminder builds on children's play well to extend their enjoyment. For example, children follow instructions to make 'slimy goo' mixtures, they discuss what it feels like and confidently share their ideas about where it may have come from, such as 'an alien's nose'.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder builds trusting and secure relationships with children. This helps children develop a positive level of emotional well-being and self-esteem. Children enjoy the company of the childminder and their friends. They gain good social skills and build meaningful friendships. For example, they play happily together, take turns and share. Children develop good physical abilities. For instance, they visit parks on the way home from school and challenge themselves as they climb and balance on the large play equipment. Children have good physical well-being. They learn the importance of healthy lifestyles. For example, they eagerly help prepare the healthy snacks and the childminder provides a homemade nutritiously balanced evening meal.
