This provision is good

 Good steps have been taken to address the actions from the last inspection. An effective system of staff supervision has been implemented to foster a culture of mutual support and to ensure that any incidences of underperformance are swiftly managed.  The quality of teaching is good overall. Staff promote children's thinking skills carefully, asking questions and giving them time to consider and express their own responses.  Staff check the learning and development progress of individual children. Records show that children on roll are making good progress from their starting points.  Relationships with parents are friendly and trusting. Partnerships with parents are a particular strength of this playgroup. Parents are respected as their child's key educator and are actively encouraged to remain involved in their child's learning.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Management has yet to embed how they evaluate the attainment levels between groups of children, so that steps can be taken to close any identified gaps in progress.  Staff do not make best use of the resources and presentation of the reading area indoors to encourage children to explore and develop an interest in books and reading.  The quality of staff interaction with children is not as consistently high at times of transition between activities as it is at other times during the session. Staff are occasionally distracted with routine activities, such as supervising handwashing.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 embed how the learning and development of different groups of children are evaluated, so that any gaps can be identified and managed at the earliest opportunity  focus more closely on supporting children's developing interest in books and reading  review the organisation of the transition between routine activities to ensure that children continue to enjoy a high standard of play, teaching and learning.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector spoke with staff at appropriate times throughout the inspection.  The inspector completed a joint observation with the playgroup manager.  The inspector held a meeting with the playgroup manager and also the nominated person and treasurer from the committee.  The inspector looked at relevant documentation, such as the self-evaluation form and evidence of the suitability of staff working in the playgroup.  The inspector looked at activity planning, records of children's learning and a selection of policies and records.  The inspector spoke to parents during the inspection and took account of their views.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Arrangements for safeguarding are effective. Staff have a good awareness of the indicators of abuse and know the process to follow if they have a concern. The playgroup committee actively supports the staff in their work. Reflective practice is embedded into the self-evaluation process. An action plan is in place, to bring about continuous improvement to the quality of care, teaching and learning. Staff are committed to their own professional development. They regularly attend relevant training courses and implement what they have learnt into the playgroup. For example, following training, staff have worked on how they help parents continue to share what they know about their child so that children's interests can be promoted in the playgroup. Relationships with parents are friendly and trusting. Discussions with parents during this inspection demonstrate the high regard they have for the staff, describing them as friendly and approachable.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Staff's knowledge and understanding of how children learn is good. They plan and deliver an interesting and varied range of activities, both indoors and outside, to support all areas of learning. Staff find out about children's starting points, know where they are in their learning and what they need to do to support their continuing progress. Staff promote children's communication skills effectively. They use pictorial prompts to support children's developing vocabulary. Staff engage children in conversation and actively listen to what they have to say. Children are supported to be active learners. For example, when creating a plastic channel in which to roll a ball, children are encouraged to think about why the ball will not roll the length of the channel, what they could do about it and to test their ideas.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Each child has a named member of staff to take responsibility for their daily well-being and to plan for their learning and development. The key persons build friendly and trusting relationships with children and parents. Children are happy, settled and secure in their relationships with staff. They confidently seek out staff to share in their play. Those children who do not separate readily from their main carer are supported well by staff to settle. Children behave well and develop good friendships with each other. They respond well to the high expectations from staff. Staff talk to children calmly, gently reminding them about being kind to each other. Staff in the playgroup have a positive approach to diversity. Children are encouraged to embrace their similarities and differences and to develop positive attitudes to each other and people beyond their own experiences.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children have a positive sense of themselves and develop the key skills needed to be ready for the next stage in their learning, such as moving on to school. They use a variety of writing materials, such as pens, crayons, paint and chalk and give meaning to the marks they make. They learn to recognise their first name when it is written. Children count confidently in routine and play situations. They manage their self-care relevant to their age.
