This provision is good
Children enjoy their play. For example, they have fun exploring the ball pool. The childminder encourages children and stimulates their enthusiasm in what they choose to do. Children giggle and laugh and they share positive interactions with him. Children develop skills that help support their progress towards the next stages in their learning. For example, they learn to identify and name the colours of objects, which helps to prepare them for later artwork. The childminder supports children effectively to understand the effect of their actions on others and to take account of other people's feelings. For example, they learn to apologise when they make a mistake. The childminder reflects well on his practice. For instance, he meets with local authority advisers and seeks their views to help identify areas that need further improvement. He has made good progress towards the recommendations and actions raised in the
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
Occasionally, the childminder misses opportunities to support children's learning without interruption, for example, during routine activities such as nappy changing times. The childminder does not always provide consistent opportunities for parents to share detailed information about their children's likes and dislikes.

What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

Inspection activities
The inspector observed the childminder and his interactions with the children. The inspector took account of the views of the children and parents. The inspector viewed a sample of documents including children's learning records and assessments of their progress. The inspector held discussions with the childminder and the co-childminder as appropriate. The inspector assessed the childminder's self-evaluation process.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
Safeguarding is effective. The childminder understands the procedures to follow to refer child protection issues to professional agencies and to safeguard children's welfare. He provides a safe environment for children to explore and is up to date with statutory training, such as paediatric first aid. He works closely with his co-childminder and they share their knowledge and skills with each other to help plan improvements to their teaching practice. For example, they have reviewed the learning programme for literacy and added resources, such as story sacks, to help improve children's learning experience further. The childminder assesses and tracks children's progress regularly to help identify and address gaps in children's learning. For example, he completes progress checks for children aged two years and shares these with parents.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder plans well for individual children's learning and he reshapes tasks to help meet the needs of older and younger children. For example, he introduces older children to three-dimensional shapes such as cylinders and cubes, and younger children to two- dimensional shapes such as circles and squares. The childminder provides a range of opportunities for children to learn about different cultures and celebrations, including those that reflect their own backgrounds. Children who are learning English as an additional language benefit from opportunities to view print in their home languages. They learn to understand the similarities and differences between themselves and others. Children learn to answer simple questions. This helps them to build further on their communication and language skills.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder is caring and responds sensitively to young children's needs. They form close bonds with him and he reassures them when they are unsettled. This contributes to their emotional well-being. The childminder works in close partnership with parents to help meet children's individual dietary needs. Children build confidence in their own abilities. For example, they eagerly engage in a range of physical activities in the soft play area in the childminder's home. Children benefit from regular opportunities to exercise. This has a positive impact on their physical well-being.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children learn to construct with a purpose in mind. For example, they make a robot with construction material with detailed features, such as arms and legs. They engage in activities that help to build on their independence. For example, older children help to tidy up after play and young children learn to feed themselves at mealtimes. Children make good progress and develop strong foundations for future learning.
