p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 The childminder has not ensured that information supplied to Ofsted about her assistant is complete.  Children do not always have rich and varied opportunities to develop their thinking skills. The childminder does not provide a wide range of resources that can be used in different ways to help children experiment with their own ideas.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 Teaching is strong and children make good progress from their individual starting points. The childminder uses her assessments of children's development to make sure her teaching is matched to individual children's needs.  Children are engaged by a broad and interesting range of experiences. The childminder carefully plans activities to provide new opportunities and to make sure they promote each child's development.  Children are happy and feel secure. The childminder creates a welcoming environment and works with parents to get to know children really well. Children build strong relationships with the childminder who knows how each child prefers to learn.  Children show they are learning to be kind, can think about others and cooperate with simple boundaries. The childminder helps them share, respect each other's differences and become independent.  The childminder evaluates her practice and has reflected on the quality of her teaching

It has the following strengths

to identify what she needs to develop. She has used professional development to improve her understanding and enhance some of the activities she provides.

 provide more learning experiences that allow children to use resources in different ways and develop their thinking skills.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector completed a joint observation with the childminder.  The inspector asked the childminder questions about her practice at appropriate times throughout the inspection.  The inspector looked at children's assessment records and planning documentation.  The inspector checked evidence of the suitability of all household members and the childminder's qualifications. The inspector also looked at the childminder's self- evaluation form and discussed her improvement plan.  The inspector took account of the views of parents and carers taken from information included in the childminder's own parent survey.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement

Due to an administrative error, the information supplied to Ofsted regarding the childminder's assistant was incomplete and she did not rectify this mistake swiftly. However, the childminder used robust procedures to recruit her assistant and assure her practice. She makes sure the assistant understands all procedures and regularly reviews her performance. The assistant only works occasionally with the childminder and is never left unsupervised with children. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good understanding of how to recognise and respond to concerns about children's welfare. She has used support from the local authority adviser effectively to help evaluate her practice. The childminder has used knowledge from training to develop more opportunities to support young children to develop their physical skills.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder is qualified, experienced and has a secure knowledge of how children learn and develop. She makes regular and precise assessments of children's development. She shares detailed observations of children's learning with parents and tracks their progress over time. The childminder identifies what children need to learn next and checks there are no concerns about their development. Children enjoy learning through play. The childminder watches children carefully during activities and extends their learning. In craft activities she models how to do things and allows children time to try it themselves. The childminder listens to young children's early language and reinforces keywords and phrases. Older children, who also attend other settings, benefit from the partnerships the childminder builds to share information about their learning.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children are motivated to learn and get involved in activities. The childminder knows the different support each child needs to be confident to have a go. She provides individual praise and reassurance to boost children's self-esteem and encourage their concentration. Children are developing independence through everyday routines. They are able to make choices in their play and are given simple responsibilities during meals and snack times. The childminder values each child's interests. She supports children to understand and celebrate the differences of other people. Children enjoy regular opportunities to learn outside through outings and daily routines. The childminder works with parents to provide healthy eating options throughout the day.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children, including younger children receiving funded early education, make good progress in their development from their individual starting points. All children are learning about how to keep themselves safe and developing good hygiene routines. The younger children are able to respond to simple boundaries and begin to share toys. As they get older, children quickly learn about numbers and colours through play and everyday activities. The childminder sensitively supports each child to develop the confidence and social skills they need as they get ready for school or nursery.
