Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 The systems that the childminder uses to monitor the progress that children make are not yet embedded in her practice. This means that she does not consistently identify and implement exactly what children need to learn next to support them to make progress.  The childminder does not always give children enough time to think about how to respond to questions and enhance their speaking skills.  The childminder does not consistently inform parents of exactly what their child needs to learn next to help them further enhance their learning at home.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 The childminder has worked hard since her last inspection. She has a clearer understanding of the different areas of learning. She plans activities that are fun and which support children's interests. Safeguarding is now effective.  Children are happy and settled in the childminder's care and they readily go to her for cuddles. The childminder interacts with children in a positive manner and at their level. She gives them lots of praise and encouragement to help build their confidence and self-esteem.  The childminder has high expectations of behaviour. She gives clear explanations to support children's understanding and they behave well.  Parents are complimentary about the childminder and the care that their children receive.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage the provider must:

p.2

Due Date

 develop the systems to monitor children's progress and ensure that what they need to learn next is consistently identified and implemented. 11/10/2016

p.2

Due Date

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Due Date

 enhance teaching skills that help children to think through ideas and have more time to respond to questions that help their language development  enhance the information shared with parents that consistently informs them of what children need to learn next and helps them complement and extend their child's learning at home.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors, and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector looked at a selection of documentation, including children's information, certificates, policies and procedures and evidence of the suitability checks for all adults living in the household.  The inspector toured the areas of the premises where childcare is provided.  The inspector observed children involved in a planned activity and discussed the outcomes of the activity with the childminder.  The inspector spoke to parents and reviewed their written comments in order to take account of their views of the service provided by the childminder.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement

The childminder does not consistently inform parents of what their child needs to learn next to help support their learning at home. Overall, she evaluates her service and is working hard to improve her practice. The childminder receives support and follows advice from a local authority early years quality officer. This has helped her to generally improve her understanding of the early years foundation stage. The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder understands how to assess risks and she uses appropriate measures to help keep the environment as safe as possible. She has a suitable knowledge and understanding of the procedures to follow should she have any concerns about children's welfare.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

Systems are not yet fully embedded to identify and implement precisely what children need to learn next in order to support them to make progress. However, the childminder provides children with interesting activities that are focused on their interests and cover different areas of learning. She observes children and monitors their achievements, which shows her what children can do. Children enjoy using paint and a variety of tools, such as brushes and rollers, to make marks. The childminder supports children to follow their own ideas and adapts the activities to support their interests. For example, mixing different colours together when children show enjoyment in squeezing paint into containers. The childminder supports colour knowledge and helps children understand the concept of size throughout their play. She reinforces what children say to help them to hear the correct pronunciation of words. However, she does not always give children time to think about

and respond to her questions to further support their speaking skills.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder supports children to develop independence and self-care skills through everyday routines. Children practise putting their own shoes on and washing their hands after messy activities. There is a range of experiences offered to children to develop their physical skills and for them to benefit from fresh air and exercise. They visit the park and local woods on a regular basis and play in the garden. The childminder organises various outings in the local environment to offer children different experiences. For example, they visit the local train station and go on a train journey. She teaches children to keep the environment safe and they tidy up toys when they have finished playing.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Children make some progress in their learning and development. However, their progress is not monitored securely enough to ensure that what they need to learn next is clearly identified and implemented. Children are supported to develop skills, such as sharing with others and taking turns. This helps them to obtain some of the skills, attitudes and dispositions they need to be ready for school.
