This provision is good
Children help the childminder plan activities based on their interests. The activities are suitable for the children's age and stage of development, and help them to make good progress. The childminder supplies a wide range of toys and resources to help children make good progress in all areas of learning. Children learn important hygiene practices during the routine of the day. They enjoy nutritious home-cooked meals. The childminder works effectively in partnership with parents and other professionals to further complement children's learning. The childminder's self-evaluation supports continuous improvement. She values parents' and children's views. She attends training courses, reads articles and shares practice with other childminders to help improve outcomes for children.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
The childminder does not make the best use of opportunities to fully extend children's early writing skills during their play. The childminder does not make the best use of opportunities to help young children to talk about themselves and people that are important to them, and to recognise similarities and differences.

What the setting needs to do to improve further

Inspection activities
The inspector observed activities in the childminder's home. The inspector spoke with the childminder and children at appropriate times throughout the inspection. The inspector looked at children's records and planning, and discussed the childminder's policies and procedures. The inspector took account of the written views of parents.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good knowledge and understanding of child protection and supporting safety. She knows the local safeguarding board procedures to follow should she have a concern about children's welfare. The childminder also keeps up to date with changes in child protection legislation. She helps children to learn about keeping safe and minimises possible safety risks across the environments they use. The childminder closely tracks children's progress to ensure that any gaps are identified and acted upon.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder closely observes children during their play; she identifies learning intentions, children's achievements and next steps for learning. The childminder understands how children learn and develop and she uses effective teaching skills. For example, she chats to children about what they are doing, makes suggestions to extend their play and demonstrates how things work. The childminder adds additional resources to extend children's attention skills and to encourage their mathematical understanding and general interest further. For example, as children explore natural materials they collected at the park, the childminder provides pots for them to count and sort items into different containers. Children observe the colours, shapes and textures they see, for example, in autumn leaves. Parents are well-informed about their children's progress and the childminder offers suggestions and shares ideas to build on their learning at home.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder establishes close relationships with children as they settle, according to their individual needs. Children have close relationships with the childminder and her family, and are relaxed in her care. She focuses strongly on building younger children's confidence, for instance, through giving plenty of praise and encouragement. Children behave well and learn good manners, to take turns and share. Children benefit from daily outings to the local environment, which help to maintain a healthy lifestyle. They develop good physical skills, for example, they climb, balance and slide on apparatus.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children are curious learners. They develop good speaking and listening skills, and respond to the world creatively and imaginatively. For example, as they chat during activities, sing and join in interactive stories, and musical and dance activities. Children develop good personal skills. For instance, they learn to feed and dress themselves, select toys and help tidy away, and sweep up before meals. Children benefit from outings to pre- school groups, which build on their social skills. They make good progress relative to their starting points in preparation for their eventual move to school.
