 Children make excellent progress relative to their starting points. The childminder uses her very thorough observations and assessments of children extremely well to identify their next steps in learning. Rigorous monitoring helps the childminder to identify and address any gaps in the learning programme promptly.  Children are extremely confident and show very high self-esteem. They develop very warm and affectionate relationships with the childminder, and show through their behaviour that they feel extremely emotionally secure.  The childminder ensures that parents regularly contribute to their children's learning, which helps her to plan targeted and challenging activities. She works extremely well with other professionals, including other early years settings children attend, to share information. This ensures excellent planning for children's future progress.  The childminder provides excellent support for children who are learning English as an

additional language. They quickly develop fluency in English and communicate extremely confidently.  The childminder has worked extremely hard since her last inspection to make excellent improvements. She constantly seeks to develop her skills to extend children's learning further. For example, research into how boys prefer to learn to write has led her to improve activities that develop their fine motor skills in preparation for writing later on.

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the childminder and children engaged in learning activities indoors and outdoors.  The inspector read feedback from parents, and talked to children.  The inspector discussed the childminder's systems to assess children's progress, and plan for future learning, and the effectiveness of these.  The inspector reviewed the childminder's safeguarding procedures, and the effectiveness with which she implements these.  The inspector sampled required documentation to assess how effectively the childminder maintains her records.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is outstanding

The childminder's self-evaluation is thorough and rigorous, helping her to develop extremely strong action plans for improvement. For example, she has improved children's choices very well by ensuring outdoor learning covers all areas of the curriculum more effectively. The childminder reviews her activities daily to ensure they meet children's changing needs. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has an excellent knowledge of Local Safeguarding Children Board procedures and is very clear about what to do to help protect children from harm.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is outstanding

The childminder plans very interesting and stimulating activities that challenge and extend children's learning extremely effectively. The childminder's excellent planning covers different and interesting activities that build on and develop children's knowledge very well. For example, prior to an outing to a farm, she read books about life on a farm, and encouraged the children to build and equip their own toy farm, helping them to gain an insight into what they might find during the visit. The childminder communicates extremely well and encourages children to explore their ideas thoroughly. For example, they had a lively discussion about unicorns, sharing how they could tell them apart from horses. The childminder plans very stimulating activities that encourage children to be highly active, for example, to climb and stretch to find numbered bottle tops and put them in order. Not all activities, however, challenge the older children further in linking letters to

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are outstanding

Children learn extremely well about their own and other cultures. The childminder teaches them very effectively about each other's customs and traditions. She positively encourages parents to support this learning so that children gain first-hand experiences of different foods and celebrations. Children learn extremely well about a healthy diet. For example, they explored a box of vegetables and talked about potatoes. They know that baked potatoes are 'fine', but chips are 'not good for them' and should only be a 'treat'. The childminder is an extremely positive role model, helping children to be highly respectful and considerate of others.

p.3

Outcomes for children are outstanding

All children achieve and develop extremely strong skills that prepare them very well for their next stage in learning. Children's excellent concentration during activities and their very good listening and social skills support them extremely well for school. Children are highly confident communicators and thoroughly enjoy exploring, with a very strong motivation to learn.
