p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder provides activities or tasks that are sometimes too complicated for the children to learn from or to fully enjoy.  The childminder misses opportunities to help children understand the world around them, in particular why things grow and how they change over the time.

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 review activities to ensure that tasks are not too complicated and children have the right level of challenge according to their age  provide more opportunities for children to develop their understanding of the world by, for example, investigating growth and changes over time.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good knowledge and understanding of child protection issues. She knows what procedures to follow if she has a concern about a child's safety or welfare. The childminder regularly continues to improve her knowledge and skills. For example, she attends training and communicates with other professionals to improve outcomes for children. The childminder has established positive and effective partnerships with parents and schools so they can work together to support children's individual needs and development. She monitors children's progress and regularly shares it with parents, who provide positive feedback and are happy about the care and learning their children receive.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder supports all children effectively to gain good early communication and language. For example, she describes what they do, gives children simple instructions, asks questions and waits for them to consider what she is asking, which aids their learning well. The childminder consistently makes the most of opportunities for children to follow their own ideas. They explore and experiment; for example, they decided to paint play dough in various colours. The childminder uses mathematical language during children's play, which successfully helps their learning.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder meets children's individual care needs effectively. Children feel secure and settle quickly. They behave very well and learn about rules and boundaries. The childminder ensures that her house is safe for children. She regularly carries out risk assessments to check the suitability of the environment, resources and equipment. She skilfully teaches children about various safety rules through their play. For example, children strap dollies into the toy pushchairs to ensure they are safe. The childminder supports children's understanding of healthy lifestyles effectively. For example, children are active, go outside regularly and follow good hygiene routines.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

All children, including those who are learning English as an additional language, make good progress according to their starting points. They gain key skills needed for their next stages in learning and eventual move to school. Children compare sizes, look what is bigger and smaller, and count. Children learn to communicate clearly, be physically active, socialise with others, and enjoy exploring and investigating. Children are independent learners. They develop a strong sense of achievement and are able to concentrate well for periods of time.
