This provision is good

 The quality of teaching is good. The childminder has high expectations for all children and creates a warm, welcoming environment. Children follow their own ideas confidently and use their imagination as they play.  Children make good progress. The childminder carefully observes children's play and plans appropriate next steps for their learning. Children are engaged in a wide range of stimulating experiences, which they enjoy.  Children share warm, supportive relationships with the childminder. They are settled and happy. They behave well and are respectful to each other.  The childminder builds effective partnerships with parents and other early years professionals. They work together successfully to meet children's needs.  The childminder ensures her home is safe and she implements clear and effective procedures to protect and safeguard children.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder sometimes misses opportunities to fully encourage children's early understanding of sounds and letters.  The childminder does not always make the most of children's curiosity about the world around them to develop their investigative skills and understanding during their play.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 develop further opportunities for children to increase their understanding of sounds and letters  extend opportunities for children to develop their investigative skills and understanding during their play, for example when learning about the physical world.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector looked at areas of the premises used for childminding.  The inspector observed activities inside the home and outside in the garden.  The inspector and childminder discussed teaching and its impact on children's learning.  The inspector looked at a range of documentation, including children's records, evidence of suitability and the childminder's training certificates.  The inspector spoke with the childminder and children at appropriate times throughout the inspection.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good knowledge and understanding of child protection procedures and knows exactly what to do if she has concerns about children's welfare. She is well organised and uses a variety of ways to keep her knowledge of the requirements and changes in legislation up to date. She accesses training to enhance children's learning, for example in developing their communication and language skills. The childminder works closely with other professionals, including her local childcare adviser, the local pre-school and other childminders. This contributes effectively to her self-evaluation and enables her to share good practice. She is ambitious and constantly strives to improve her provision.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder tracks children's progress carefully to ensure that she identifies and swiftly addresses gaps in their learning. She has a good understanding of how to support all areas of learning through play and children's interests. She successfully encourages children's communication and language skills. For example, when children played with toy sea creatures during their water play, the childminder introduced new vocabulary and asked challenging questions to develop their knowledge. Children have exciting opportunities to develop their imagination and use different materials, for example, when children suggested ideas and created a model pirate ship.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children are well behaved and well mannered. They listen to the childminder, who offers gentle reminders about sharing and taking turns during their play. Children confidently explore and make decisions about what they are going to do next. The childminder encourages children to take responsibility for themselves. For example, she encourages them to put on their outdoor clothes by themselves. Children have a broad range of opportunities to develop their physical skills. For example, they enjoy using ride-on toys and they use safe cutters to create different shaped sandwiches for their lunch. The childminder constantly praises children, which builds their confidence and self-esteem.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress. They are confident and enthusiastic learners. They develop good skills and attitudes to support their future learning and readiness for school. Children listen carefully and speak about things that interest them. They concentrate and follow instructions carefully. Children develop their interest in books, for example through regular opportunities to read stories with the childminder. They develop their counting skills well and learn to recognise different shapes. They enjoy mark making and skilfully use different tools to shape materials, for example, when using playdough.
