This provision is good

 The childminder provides a warm, welcoming and nurturing environment. She has a good relationship with the children. Children settle quickly, become confident learners and learn to work well together.  Parents value the childminder's support and praise and the two-way exchange of information that helps meet children's care and learning needs well.  The childminder works closely with parents and other experts to ensure children's care and learning experiences build on what they already know. Children are ready for their next steps in learning and make good progress.  The childminder is passionate about her role. She typically provides enjoyable, age- appropriate experiences that motivate children's interest to learn. Children enjoy their learning; they concentrate, and play independently.  The childminder evaluates her practice carefully, taking account of what parents, other experts and children say to help improve what she offers children and their families.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not help children's early number skills and mathematical understanding develop as well as she might.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 support children's early counting skills further to aid their mathematical understanding.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector had a tour of the setting and looked at resources, materials and the environment.  The inspector held discussions with the childminder and talked with the children.  The inspector observed the progress of individual children.  The inspector read a sample of policies, children's records, planning, evaluation documents and feedback from parents.  The inspector observed an activity and discussed this with the childminder.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder has a good understanding of child protection procedures. She knows how to keep children safe and the local procedures for reporting any concerns. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder reflects on what she provides and uses knowledge gained from training to help improve children's outcomes. She typically provides age-appropriate activities that enable children to learn and develop in most areas. Her policies are up to date and she works collaboratively with other providers and parents to ensure children are cared for well and taught effectively. Parents say that they value what the childminder provides.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Teaching is typically good. The childminder makes accurate observations of children and uses what she learns alongside information from others to ensure most learning activities build on each child's interests and abilities. She uses advice from outside professionals to ensure the particular needs of individual children are met and to help ensure they make good progress. Children are encouraged to explore the natural environment and learn about materials such as sand, water and modelling dough when indoors and outdoors. They are helped to extend their speaking skills effectively, for example, by describing their experiences with others. Children are encouraged to make marks using a range of pencils, crayons, chalks and paints as they develop their early writing skills. Activities such as looking at books and listening to stories help to develop their early reading skills.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Each child's personal development and welfare are checked carefully. The childminder encourages children to be kind and considerate to others and she teaches them to take turns and share. Children's behaviour is good and they are considerate of each other's needs. Children learn to wash their hands before eating, set the table and select their own snacks. They know to wear sun hats and play in a shady part of the garden on hot days. The childminder and children sit together at snack and lunch and enjoy their conversations. For example, they discuss what the food looks like and how it tastes. Healthy eating and an active lifestyle are encouraged to ensure children's good levels of well-being.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are independent and active learners who enjoy playing and learning. They work well together. For example, they explore how to make a ride-on toy move in different directions. Children develop their early speaking, listening and writing skills well. Children make good progress, given what they know before they start, and they are well prepared for their next stage of learning.
