Inspection activities
The inspector had a tour of the areas used for childminding. The inspector observed the childminder and children during play and completed a joint observation and discussion. The inspector examined a sample of policies, documents and children's records. The inspector read feedback to gain parents' views. The inspector discussed the childminder's self-evaluation process.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
Safeguarding is effective. The childminder keeps up to date with local child protection procedures and knows what to do if she has concerns for children's safety. She updates her knowledge relating to childcare and gains new ideas, such as through training and researching information. The childminder monitors children's progress well and shares her findings with parents to involve them in their children's learning. The childminder gains parents' and children's views to help make changes to her teaching practice and to improve outcomes for children.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder completes regular observations and assessments to determine what children need to learn next. She plans activities that are closely linked to children's next steps and interests. The childminder introduces mathematics at every opportunity and children develop good mathematical skills. For example, she counts stairs as children climb, discusses shapes and encourages children to match items, such as red items to red bowls. Children enjoy reading books and the childminder supports their learning well. For instance, she introduces props relating to the story to maintain their interest. Children explore the different sounds that instruments make and learn to use technology such as electronic keyboards. They gain a good awareness of diversity and the world around them through a variety of activities.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are outstanding
Children behave extremely well. They have excellent opportunities to develop their social skills and build strong friendships. Children are eager to join in play, and they show high levels of attention and concentration for their stage of development. The childminder implements the highest standards of care and hygiene practice, which supports the personal needs of young children exceptionally well. Children learn to take care of the environment. For example, the childminder encourages them to put away toys after playing with them. The childminder teaches children to keep themselves and others safe in very practical ways. For example, she ensures that even the youngest children practise road safety on outings, discuss how to cool down food before eating it and learn how to use cutlery safely.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children are confident and develop strong independence skills. For example, they use knives confidently to cut up fruit and learn to dress themselves. Children engage well in imaginative play, for example, as they use a variety of tools to make cakes and mud pies. They have several opportunities to develop their early writing skills. Children are well prepared for their next stage in learning and school.
