This provision is good
The childminder and her assistant have a good knowledge of the procedures to follow if they have a safeguarding concern for a child. They complete regular safety checks to help to ensure children are not at risk while in the home and on outings. The childminder updates her knowledge, for example, by attending training and undertaking online research. She effectively supervises her assistant and supports her to attend training. This helps to continually improve the quality of teaching. The childminder and her assistant complete regular observations of children's play and learning and gather relevant information from parents. They use this information to plan activities that help children to reach the potential of which they are capable. Children enjoy playing with the wide variety of resources in the main playroom and in the garden areas. They are able to get physical exercise and fresh air on a daily basis.
p.1
This provision is good
Children have a close bond with the childminder and her assistant. Children settle well and learn key skills that help them to be ready for the next stage in their learning.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
Occasionally the childminder misses opportunities to support her assistant to help extend children's use of language and to use their imagination fully. The childminder does not provide enough activities to help children learn about the differences and similarities between people, or about their local community.

What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

Inspection activities
The inspector viewed the areas of the home and garden used by the children. The inspector looked at a sample of documents and policies, including the suitability of the assistant, safeguarding policies, and the tracking of children's progress. The inspector spoke to the childminder, the assistant and the children at appropriate times. The inspector and childminder watched an activity delivered to the children by the childminder's assistant and discussed the learning intentions and outcome.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
Safeguarding is effective. The childminder and her assistant complete regular checks to ensure children stay safe. For example, children take part in regular fire drills so they understand what to do in an emergency. The childminder evaluates her practice well, gathering the opinions of parents and the children in order to identify areas that need improving. She also keeps parents well informed about their child's progress, and helps them to help their child learn more at home. Recently the childminder has supported parents who speak English as an additional language to use more English at home. This has resulted in the children's speech improving more rapidly. Parents comment that they feel their children are safe and have suitable routines with the childminder.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder regularly monitors and records children's progress. She uses this information to plan activities that target skills that the children need to develop. During the inspection children were given the opportunity to extend their mathematical skills. They enjoyed painting with stamps and brushes, drawing numbers, and discussing shapes. The childminder uses her good knowledge of how children learn and plans activities that engage and motivate children to participate. She offers an even balance of planned activities alongside play that is led by the children's interests. Children enjoyed waiting to take turns on the slide and counting as each of them climbed up the steps and counting down to sliding down the slope.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder sets a good example to children, reminding them to be polite, have good manners and to wait for their turn. Young children receive choices to help them manage their behaviour, for example, being able to choose a sticker as a reward for washing their hands before snack time. Children learn to be independent, for such as taking off their own shoes and jumpers, and using utensils to feed themselves at lunchtime. The childminder and her assistant take the children on visits to local supermarkets and restaurants to help children learn about healthy eating. The childminder provides nutritious snacks and home-cooked food. Children show that they feel safe and are very happy when they receive praise from the childminder and her assistant.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children gain experiences to prepare them for school; for example, they learn to put their belongings onto a peg and to write their own name. Children make good progress in their learning and are willing to try challenging skills, such as naming colours of paints as they were mixed together. They behave well towards each other, helping each other to sing songs and to remember the order of numbers.
