Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 The childminder does not complete the progress check for children between the ages of two and three years.  Information gained from observations and assessments of children's progress is not precise enough to clearly identify children's next steps in learning. Activities are not consistently tailored to children's individual needs.  The childminder does not use information gathered from parents to help her identify children's starting points for learning when they first attend.  The childminder has not evaluated her practice thoroughly enough to identify where improvements need to be made to raise the quality of the provision.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 The experienced childminder establishes secure relationships with children and their families. She understands how to foster children's emotional well-being effectively. Children feel safe and happy in her care. Parents are very complimentary about the service that she provides.  The childminder is a good role model for children. She encourages good manners and has high expectations of children's behaviour. Children learn to share and play cooperatively with one another.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage the provider must:

p.2

Due Date

 develop knowledge of the progress check for children aged between two and three years and ensure that a review of children's progress is made and a written summary of children's development in the prime areas of their learning is provided for parents 31/10/2016

p.2

Due Date

 ensure that observations and assessments of children's progress are consistently precise and used to plan suitable and challenging activities for children. 31/10/2016

p.2

Due Date

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Due Date

 involve parents more fully in sharing information about what children already know and can do when they first join the setting in order to inform the assessment of children's starting points  make better use of self-evaluation to identify where improvements need to be made and implement effective action plans to raise the overall quality of the provision.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector viewed the areas of the house and garden used for childminding.  The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector jointly evaluated an activity with the childminder.  The inspector spoke to the childminder throughout the inspection as appropriate. She looked at relevant documentation, such as the evidence of the suitability of adults living in the house.  The inspector took account of the views of children and parents spoken to on the day of inspection.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement

The childminder has begun to make improvements in her practice since her last inspection. She has developed solid working relationships with other settings in her area, such as the local pre-school. She works alongside other childminders in her area to share good practice and ideas. However, the childminder's lack of robust self-evaluation means that she does not always identity areas of her practice which require attention in order to meet requirements. For example, the childminder does not fully understand the requirements relating to the progress check for children aged between two and three years. The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has a secure understanding of the signs and symptoms of abuse and is clear about the action to take if she has concerns about a child.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

The childminder is appropriately qualified and plans a wide range of activities for children to enjoy, both indoors and outside. She gets to know children well and understands their interests. However, the childminder is not fully confident in identifying when children have gaps in their learning. Assessment is too broad and does not identify precisely what children need to learn next. As a result, children are not supported to make the best possible progress. Furthermore, when children first start, the childminder does not gather information from parents about what their children can already do. This means she is not able to assess their starting points for their learning as accurately as possible in order to plan highly effectively from the start. In some areas teaching is better. Children enjoy taking part in different craft activities planned by the childminder. They practise their small-muscle skills using a needle and thread to sew together a hand puppet. Children's

emotional development is well supported by the childminder.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder nurtures all children in her care. She is loving and caring towards them and they enjoy their time with her. The childminder is vigilant and ensures that children play in a safe and secure environment. She works in partnership with parents to promote good behaviour. She gives them ideas about how to promote their children's positive behaviour. The childminder provides children with healthy and nutritious meals and snacks. She shares information with parents about healthy eating and the importance of eating a balanced, nutritious diet. The childminder encourages children to use good manners. Even young children say please and thank you. The childminder provides children with plenty of opportunities for fresh air and physical play and plans regular trips to the park and local play areas.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

The childminder does not consistently support children to make good progress in all areas of their learning and development. This is because her assessments are weak and, as a result, teaching does not precisely match children's needs. However, children are developing some of the skills they need to start school. Children enjoy socialising with others and are learning to share and take turns.
