This provision is good

 The childminder places a strong emphasis on supporting children's communication and language development. She encourages older children to talk about their experiences and reflects back what younger children say to help extend their vocabulary skills.  Children are settled, happy and confident in the childminder's home. She has developed warm and trusting relationships with all children. This helps to effectively promote their emotional well-being. Children build their self-assurance in a wide range of social situations and make good progress in their learning.  Partnerships with parents are particularly strong. Parents describe how the childminder takes account of what children do with them at home. They are highly complimentary about the progress their children make, especially in the development of their speech and social skills.  The childminder provides an extensive range of resources and experiences to help

children develop their understanding of people who are different to them. She values each child as the special and unique individual they are.  Children's physical well-being is strong. The childminder provides a wealth of exciting outdoor experiences for them. She uses the local nature reserves to inspire children and help enrich their understanding of the world.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not yet focus her self-evaluation to identify precise targets for improvement and plan professional development to raise the quality of practice to the highest level.  The childminder does not fully support children's understanding of why it is important to eat healthy foods and the impact this can have on their bodies.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder is well trained in child protection and up to date with new legislation. She demonstrates a good understanding of the possible signs of abuse. This good practice is underpinned by her strong knowledge of the action to take should she have concerns about a child's welfare. Overall, the childminder shows a clear drive for improvement and has addressed all actions and recommendations from her last inspection. The childminder evaluates her practice, in general, and seeks the views of parents. She carefully monitors children's learning to help identify areas where they need further support. The childminder works closely with other settings and shares information about children's learning. This helps to foster a consistent approach.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The qualified childminder demonstrates a good understanding of how children learn. This has a positive impact on the quality of her teaching and on children's progress. She plans interesting activities for children and encourages them to represent their experiences. Older children talk confidently about the patterns they notice in the water on visits to the canal. They recreate these in their paintings. The childminder differentiates activities very well. Younger children enjoy plenty of time to explore the sensory qualities of paint. The childminder reads to children using good expression to help capture their interest. Young children join in enthusiastically with the familiar sections. The childminder helps children to understand that they can find information about insects from non-fiction books. Children play imaginatively together, pretending to make ice creams. Older children demonstrate their understanding and describe how the ice cream melts on a hot day. The childminder

interacts extremely well with children and skilfully challenges their thinking.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder offers a warm and welcoming environment for children. Her home is safe and well organised. Children independently select the easily accessible play resources. The childminder tailors the settling-in process extremely well to meet children's individual needs. Older children show kindness and caring behaviour towards younger children. They respond positively to the clear guidance and expectations the childminder provides. Children behave extremely well. The childminder's garden is highly stimulating and provides children with a range of interesting learning experiences. Children challenge their physical capabilities and they join in action songs, chase after bubbles, climb with skill and energetically push the wheeled toys around her garden.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are very motivated and display a positive approach to their learning. All children make good progress and some make rapid progress in their development. Children display a thirst for knowledge and are curious and interested. Children demonstrate a love of books and listen attentively to stories. Their early mathematical skills are developing effectively. All children are well prepared for the next stage in their learning, including when the time comes, starting school.
