This provision is good

 Children are secure and happy. The childminder forms positive relationships with them and supports their emotional well-being effectively. Children confidently choose the activities they want to play with, are motivated to join in and concentrate well.  The childminder makes regular ongoing assessments of children to help her recognise what they know and can do. She uses this to teach challenging activities to extend their learning successfully. She checks their progress effectively to identify and address any areas in their learning that may need a boost.  Children make good progress in relation to what they know when they start. The childminder plans activities to support children's individual needs effectively. She adapts her teaching to cater for children who speak English as an additional language.  The childminder evaluates her practice effectively. She seeks and acts on the advice of others, such as the local childminding coordinator, to improve aspects of her setting.

p.1

This provision is good

She recognises her strengths and areas for development to help her make changes and maintain improvement since starting.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Occasionally, the childminder misses opportunities to extend children's understanding of good hygiene practices.  The childminder does not gather enough information from parents about their children's early achievements to help plan what they need to learn next.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 build on opportunities for children to develop their understanding of simple hygiene routines  gather further information from parents about what their children already know and can do when they first start, to help guide plans for their future learning.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector held discussions with the childminder about how she reflects on the quality of her service.  The inspector observed the interactions between the childminder and children.  The inspector looked at a range of documentation, including safety risk assessments, children's attendance records and the childminder's policies and procedures.  The inspector viewed parts of the premises used for childminding.  The inspector considered the written views of parents.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder develops her professional skills effectively and has improved aspects of her provision following registration. For example, she has attended training around observation and assessment to develop her knowledge further. She skilfully uses what she learns to influence and improve her teaching expertise. For instance, she has adapted her assessment procedures to help her find out about children's development more efficiently. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder recognises the indicators that may suggest a child being at risk of harm and she knows the procedures to follow if she has any welfare concerns. Parents say they like her provision.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder has a good understanding of how children learn and she uses this to plan interesting, age-appropriate activities for them. For instance, she finds out what children enjoy and uses this to plan exciting experiences to support learning in all areas. She engages with children well while they play to extend their learning. For example, she talks about the names of shapes while children create pictures, supporting their language and early mathematical development effectively. Children develop their social skills well through skilful teaching. For example, the childminder takes them to different clubs, such as a dance class, to interact with others and develop their confidence. The childminder generally works with parents well to exchange information about their current learning needs and progress after starting. Furthermore, she helps parents who want to support their children's learning at home.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children behave well. The childminder shares her expectations with them to help them understand how to treat others. For instance, children learn good manners and how to share. Children eat nutritious foods and generally learn about healthy lifestyles. Furthermore, children are active and enjoy using apparatus in the childminder's garden, such as the trampoline, to develop their physical well-being. The childminder implements effective procedures to protect children from harm. She regularly risk assesses all areas children use to identify and remove any hazards.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress. They are well prepared for their future learning. For example, they develop good physical skills, such as being able to move and use tools confidently to create pictures. They develop good communication skills and children who speak English as an additional language learn to name objects in their home language as well as English. Children like stories and develop good listening skills.
