This provision is good
The childminder provides a warm and welcoming environment inside her home and outdoors in the garden. Children have regular opportunities to explore the local community and develop their physical skills in larger spaces. The childminder knows children well. She observes how they learn and takes care to find out what they are interested in. The childminder makes use of this information to plan activities and play opportunities that keep children interested and motivated to learn. Parents provide positive feedback about the childminder who works well with them. She keeps parents well informed about their children's progress and uses information about their child's achievements at home to build on. The childminder promotes children's independence and self-care skills well, relative to their age and stage of development. This helps children to learn the personal and social skills required for the next stage in their learning.
p.1
This provision is good
The childminder has made good links with other settings that children attend, which effectively promotes continuity in children's learning and development.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
On a small number of occasions, the childminder does not fully exploit opportunities for children to develop their speaking skills to the highest level. Evaluation of practice is not yet rigorous enough to ensure that there is a sharp and accurate focus on areas requiring development. As a result, opportunities to provide support for further learning are missed.

What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

Inspection activities
The inspector viewed the areas used for childminding. She talked to the children and childminder at appropriate times throughout the inspection, and observed a variety of activities. The inspector looked at evidence of the suitability and qualifications of the childminder as well as a selection of policies and procedures, including safeguarding. She discussed risk assessments and the childminder's self-evaluation process. The inspector carried out a joint observation with the childminder. She discussed children's learning and development, sampled their records and looked at the planning documentation. The inspector took account of the views of parents by reading a number of their comments on questionnaires and letters obtained by the childminder.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has a clear understanding of her role and responsibility to protect the welfare of children and keep them safe, and she treats this as a priority. She monitors children's progress effectively and works closely with parents to provide consistent care, learning and positive outcomes for all children. Parents speak highly of the well-qualified childminder and the service she provides. The childminder carries out routines that help to keep children safe. For example, she practises emergency evacuations with them so they become familiar with the procedure. She assesses risks both in the home and on outings to identify potential hazards so these can be addressed.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder knows the children well. She gathers information from parents before they start, including care routines and what their child can already do. She observes children and plans activities based on their interests and stages of development. Children are motivated to learn as they engage in their chosen play. For example, they make their own den and use this to play and experiment with toys, concentrating as they fit small blocks together. The childminder has developed the outdoor area to provide a good range of activities and learning opportunities. This helps to support children who prefer to learn outdoors. She shares information about children effectively with parents and other professionals. This helps to promote continuity of care and learning.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder provides stimulating and very welcoming play areas. Children learn to manage their own safety and develop their independence. For example, at snack time children cut up their fruit using safety knives with skill and care. Children learn about the importance of a healthy lifestyle. They have healthy and well-balanced meals and snacks, and learn good hygiene routines. Children develop good physical skills during daily opportunities for outdoor play and exercise. Children behave well. The childminder is very calm and gently reminds children of good behaviours, such as saying please and thank you. They learn about their local community as they visit local country parks and farms. The childminder uses these opportunities to help children keep themselves safe. For example, they learn not to eat berries they find on walks.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children make good progress in all areas of their learning from their starting points. The childminder monitors their development and identifies any gaps in their learning so this can be addressed quickly. Children gain the skills they need for their next stage in learning.
