This provision is good

 The childminder keeps children safe from harm. She has a thorough understanding of the safeguarding procedures to follow should she have a concern. She completes effective safety measures to ensure children play in a safe environment.  The childminder completes regular observations and assessments of children's learning. She successfully shares this information with parents so they are well informed about their children's progression.  Children in the care of the childminder and her assistant behave well and are eager to learn. They enjoy exploring the good range of resources available, in the garden and in the playroom.  Children make good progress from their starting points when they first attend and gain the skills they need to prepare them well for school.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not seek the views of children to help her adapt and consider their ideas when planning and making changes to her practice.  Occasionally, the childminder does not take all opportunities to challenge and fully extend children's learning to help them progress more rapidly.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 gather the views of children to help develop the quality of the provision and activities further  monitor children's progress even more closely to help plan activities more precisely and challenge their learning even further.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector viewed the areas of the home used for childminding, including the garden.  The inspector observed the childminder with the children and discussed an observation of an activity and children's learning.  The inspector looked at a sample of documents and policies, including risk assessments, safeguarding and records for the assistant.  The inspector looked at children's records and the arrangements for observation, assessment and planning.  The inspector spoke to the childminder, her assistant and the children when appropriate to do so.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder updates her knowledge to ensure she is fully aware of her responsibilities and to develop her skills further. She shares information with her assistant to ensure he understands his role and has plans to support him even further. Safeguarding is effective. Overall, the childminder evaluates her practice well and clearly identifies areas to improve and how these will be addressed. The childminder keeps parents informed about their children's care and learning, and successfully works in partnership with them. For example, the childminder and parents worked together to provide suitable healthy snacks to meet children's individual needs. The childminder supports parents well to continue learning at home, such as to help children develop their early writing skills.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder gathers appropriate information from parents when a child first starts with her. She uses this to help them settle well, and provide appropriate and stimulating activities that help them to gain new skills. The childminder cleverly extends children's mathematical and physicals skills during activities that they enjoy. For example, children learned the sequence of numbers and developed their coordination while fishing for toys from the paddling pool and manipulating play dough. The childminder has a calm approach and encourages children's communication skills well. For example, she gives children time to think and answer questions at their own pace. They were eager to try new activities and followed instructions easily.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children are polite and well behaved. The childminder provides a varied programme of activities to engage and motivate the children indoors and outdoors. For example, they have good opportunities to be active and enjoy exercise in the garden and have a quiet time reading books. The childminder successfully supports children to be independent and has clearly improved this since the last inspection. For example, children help themselves to drinks, feed themselves and wash their own hands.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children achieve well. For example, they learn to write their name after practising this with the childminder and at home. Children are confident to try challenging activities, such as comparing the size of a play-dough model to other objects like their own hand. Children communicate well. They excitedly speak about their move to school and how they will find the name peg for their belongings.
