This provision is good

 The childminder continually evaluates her provision to identify areas of her practice to develop further. She implements her ideas promptly to secure continuous improvement.  Children's safety is given high priority. The childminder is vigilant when out and about and makes children aware of potential hazards to keep them safe. She teaches children to identify risk themselves to help them to be aware of their own personal safety.  The childminder is skilful in developing children's interests and ideas to provide good quality learning opportunities. She enthuses children and questions them effectively to motivate them to learn.  The outdoor environment is highly stimulating for children. Children freely choose from a wide and interesting range of opportunities which helps children to develop their creativity and imagination.  Children build secure bonds with the childminder. She is calm and caring and

responsive to children's needs. She demonstrates an interest in their lives outside of the setting and their interests within it. This helps children to feel valued and respected.  The childminder closely monitors children's progress from when they first start at the setting. She is quick to identify where children fail to make suitable progress and addresses the issue at the earliest opportunity.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not always make the most of opportunities to enhance children's understanding of number and mathematical language.  Children do not always have the opportunity to try to find their own solutions to conflicts as the childminder sometimes intervenes too quickly to resolve disputes for them.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

 enhance opportunities for children to experience even more challenging activities to develop their counting skills and build their understanding of mathematical language  extend children's understanding of how to manage conflict and support them to sometimes find their own solutions to disagreements.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector jointly evaluated an activity with the childminder.  The inspector looked at relevant documentation, such as the childminder's self- evaluation, children's learning and development records and a sample of the childminder's policies and procedures.  The inspector spoke with the childminder and children at appropriate times during the inspection and took account of parent's written comments.  The inspector checked evidence of the suitability of the childminder and other household members and the childminder's qualifications.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder is aware of the procedure to follow if she has concerns about children's welfare. She has accessed a wide range of training to expand her knowledge and awareness of safeguarding issues, such as how to keep children safe online and how to protect children's personal information. The childminder is well organised and implements her policies and procedures effectively. These are regularly reviewed to ensure she keeps up to date with the most recent developments in childcare practice. The childminder meets up with other childminders to share their ideas for practice. She expands her knowledge further and completes her own independent research to enhance her provision.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder is an experienced practitioner and demonstrates her secure understanding of how children learn and develop. She is skilful in supporting children's learning and provides an imaginative range of resources for children to explore their ideas. Children enjoy a role play activity where they mix and prepare food made from natural resources outside. The childminder perceptively identifies opportunities to extend learning. For example, when children independently draw outside, she joins them to describe what they have drawn and asks them questions about their creation. The childminder observes children regularly to help her to identify what she needs to plan for them to help them to achieve their next steps in learning. Regular assessments are completed and shared with parents to ensure they are made fully aware of children's development and progress. The childminder involves parents in children's learning and suggests to them how to support

children's learning at home. Parents comment positively about the childminder's practice.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children are independent and manage self-care skills well. They competently dress themselves for going outdoors and identify what they need to wear. Children follow good hygiene procedures and routinely wash their hands at appropriate times, such as before eating and after playing outside. Children are encouraged to eat healthily and are offered healthy options for snack. Children's physical well-being is promoted to a high level as they experience lengthy time outdoors and enjoy walking in the nearby fields. This provides opportunities for children to exercise their bodies and raises children's awareness of nature and the world around them. The childminder praises children often, which promotes their self-esteem. Children take pride in their achievements and enjoy revisiting activities they have done as they look at photographs from their learning records.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are inquisitive and concentrate well as they explore and investigate indoors and outside. They are active learners and follow their own ideas, which leads to imaginative opportunities in self-directed play. This adds depth to children's learning and fosters an eagerness to learn. These are key qualities to help children to prepare well for the next stage in their learning, such as school.
