This provision is good

 Children have extremely warm, close relationships with the childminder. They settle quickly and develop extraordinary confidence and independence.  Children are motivated and eager to learn and explore. They enjoy a good range of activities and resources that are based on their interests and individual learning needs. All children make good progress.  The childminder supports children effectively in developing good physical skills, so they gain good control and coordination of their movements. The childminder provides many opportunities for children to benefit from activities outdoors, where they get plenty of exercise and fresh air, which supports healthy lifestyles.  The childminder works closely with parents and informs them about their children's day and the progress they make. She shares ideas with them to continue their learning at home.  The childminder continues to improve her knowledge and skills. For example, she

attends courses and undertakes research to improve her teaching skills and outcomes for children. She regularly evaluates her services to ensure she maintains a good drive for improvement.

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Sometimes, the childminder does not give enough time for children to think for themselves, particularly when asking questions.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

 provide more time and opportunities for children to think for themselves and develop their ideas fully before intervening.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed activities and the childminder's interaction with children throughout the inspection.  The inspector sampled children's observation, planning and assessment documents, and looked at the registration records.  The inspector checked evidence of the childminder's suitability to work with children and sampled her policies and procedures.  The inspector held conversations with the childminder and children.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good knowledge of safeguarding issues and knows how to protect and keep children safe. She knows what procedures to follow should she have a concern about a child's welfare. The childminder checks all play areas for hazards effectively, and ensures children play and learn in a safe environment. She monitors children's progress effectively and ensures that any gaps in learning and development identified are rapidly closing. The childminder involves parents well in their children's learning from the start and seeks their opinion in improving her practice. Parents report that they are happy with their children's progress and services provided.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder forms a detailed knowledge of children's development from her observations and assessments, and plans a good range of activities in which children engage well. The childminder supports all children well, including those who are learning to speak English as an additional language, so they gain good early communication and language skills. For example, she describes what children see and do, uses repetitive language, reads stories and sings songs with them. The childminder uses all opportunities to teach children about the world around them. For example, they are fascinated to find aeroplanes in the air and recall their own previous holiday experiences.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are outstanding

Children thrive as the childminder meets their needs incredibly well. She works closely with parents to establish children's care needs, routines and interests, and provides a warm and welcoming environment. The childminder talks to children in a calm and respectful manner. This helps children to understand how to manage their own behaviour, to make friends and respect each other. The childminder provides children with plenty of choices throughout the day. Children behave extremely well and follow established house rules. Children receive well-balanced meals and snacks, and follow vigorous hygiene routines to support healthy lifestyles. Children develop a secure understanding of diversity and the wider community. For example, they enjoy a variety of well-planned outings, where they learn to explore and learn about differences.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

All children gain the necessary skills for their future learning and move to school. They engage in activities for extended periods and enjoy exploring and investigating. For example, children concentrate well when cutting pretend fruits and vegetables in half, while developing good control of their movements and hand-to-eye coordination. They learn to take risks and use mathematical language, such as 'whole' and 'half'.
