This provision is good

 The childminder manages children's behaviour effectively, for instance, by being fair, calm and consistent in her approach. Children behave well.  The childminder plans a broad variety of interesting activities that cover all areas of learning. She regularly observes children and uses this information to provide suitably challenging activities. Children make good progress in their development.  The childminder helps to ensure children's safety, for example, by regularly checking all areas of her home to prevent accidents.  Children are happy and settled. They relate warmly to the childminder, who has built strong, warm relationships with children.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not consistently offer the best possible opportunities for children to learn about the natural world.  Opportunities for children to freely draw and practise their early writing skills are not fully developed.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 develop further opportunities for children to explore, experiment and investigate in the outdoor area, to support children who learn best outdoors  build on opportunities for children to practise their early drawing and pre-writing skills.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector viewed the premises with the childminder.  The inspector discussed children's progress with the childminder.  The inspector sampled some documentation and held a discussion with the childminder.  The inspector observed interaction between the childminder and the children.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder keeps parents well informed of their children's progress and works well with others to support children's learning. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a secure knowledge and understanding of the procedures to follow should she be concerned about a child's welfare. She is committed to improving her skills and knowledge and has recently attended a course to enhance ways to evaluate her practice. This has led to the identification of clear goals to build ongoing improvement. Monitoring is effective. The childminder exchanges ideas with other childminders to improve planning and assessment, which she checks regularly to identify and tackle gaps in learning.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder supports children's early reading skills well. For instance, she provides creative storytelling sessions where children make props to take part in the story. The childminder asks children questions about the story to encourage their understanding of story structure. She provides good ways for children to play imaginatively. For example, children take part in role play and cook 'dinner' for guests. The childminder supports children's early mathematics skills well. She provides good ways for children to climb, balance and move in different ways on a range of outdoor equipment. The childminder teaches children good physical coordination skills, such as throwing, catching and kicking balls.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder builds children's confidence well, for example, by treating each child as an individual and praising their efforts. Children are motivated to learn. They have good independence skills. For instance, they put on their shoes and outer clothing, and use the bathroom independently to wash their hands. The childminder teaches children to behave in safe ways. For example, they understand the dangers of tipping back on chairs and know how to behave in safe ways when crossing the road. Children have healthy routines. The childminder provides freshly prepared nutritious food and takes children outdoors for physical exercise each day.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress. They learn to share and take turns, and to speak and listen to others. Children develop good mathematical skills. They count confidently and have an awareness of shape and size. They are motivated and develop a good attitude for learning and valuable skills for future use in school.
