This provision is good

 The childminder is experienced in early years childcare and knows how to meet children's care and learning needs well. For example, she makes good use of her local links and connections to keep up with changes and exchange ideas.  Children take part in a wide range of interesting activities. They easily choose from the wide variety of resources inside and in the garden. Children make good progress in their learning and development.  The playroom is inviting and child friendly. For instance, children can find and take what they want and they learn to make choices confidently.  The childminder recognises children very much as unique individuals. She finds out about them and their family, and effectively plans around each child's routine, interests and abilities.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not always support children to reflect on their differences and similarities to others in the wider world.  The childminder misses some opportunities to improve children's early mathematics knowledge and understanding.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 support children even further to develop positive attitudes about people's differences and similarities  extend and improve children's understanding and use of numbers, and awareness of size and shapes.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector saw how the childminder plays with children in her house and garden.  The inspector viewed the parts of the childminder's home used by children.  The inspector saw a selection of documents, including suitability checks for the childminder and children's development records.  The inspector took account of parents' views from written statements.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder keeps children safe. For example, she checks her home is in good order before children arrive and points things out for them to be aware of on outings. The childminder heightens her knowledge of child protection, such as by completing comprehensive training courses. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder establishes strong partnerships with parents to provide children with consistent care. She keeps parents updated with children's progress and regularly invites them to contribute their views. The childminder closely monitors children's progress and continuously makes adjustments to close any gaps quickly through effective planning. She reflects daily on her practice and makes alterations that improve her provision for children. For example, she moved the playroom downstairs so it is more accessible and children enter straight into it, which helps them settle more quickly.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder is a skilled teacher. She knows, for example, when to leave children to explore and experiment, and when to intervene with simple guidance and support. The childminder supports children's language and communication effectively. For example, she talks as children play and introduces new words, asks them questions and sings rhymes. The childminder gathers useful information from parents at the start as a basis for her planning, along with her observations of children as they settle in. She offers children a wide range of activities, for example, that encourages them to be creative and messy. They have great fun as they use spray bottles to paint on a bed sheet hanging outside, watching the colours merge and create rainbow patterns.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children behave well. The childminder consistently praises children's efforts to encourage them to achieve, behave and raise their self-esteem. She teaches children to consider others, and they share and take turns respectfully. Children settle well and have good relationships with the childminder and her family. They learn the value of being active and eating well as part of daily routines for good health. Children become increasingly confident and independent, such as hanging up their belongings on arrival, washing their hands and choosing what they play with.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress from their individual starting points. Children show many skills that prepare them well for their future learning, such as school. For example, they are curious and eager to try things for themselves, for instance, as they use different tools to dig in the garden. They concentrate well and persevere, such as repeatedly separating and stacking cups until they fit together.
