This provision is good
Parents are kept well informed of their children's well-being and learning. For example, the childminder shares children's next steps in learning with them and provides ideas to support these at home. Children take part in a wide range of interesting activities. They easily choose from the interesting variety of resources available inside and in the garden. They make good progress in their learning from their starting points. The childminder is calm and caring and builds good bonds with children. She spends time positively playing and talking with children, and they are happy and ready to learn. The childminder takes positive steps to evaluate her effectiveness and to help her make improvements. For example, she seeks the views of parents through questionnaires and receives very complimentary feedback about the care she provides. The childminder teaches children to respect each other and offers them warm praise

and encouragement. Children develop good levels of self-esteem and behave well.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
The childminder does not always challenge children's thinking effectively to help develop their understanding even further. For example, by encouraging children to work out the temperature of materials and what may be in the middle of their fruit. The childminder does not always make full use of opportunities, such as daily routines, to further encourage children's understanding of the importance of a healthy lifestyle.
p.1
What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2
Inspection activities
The inspector observed children and the childminder playing together. The inspector examined a sample of documentation, including safeguarding policies and procedures, and children's records. The inspector and childminder discussed the play activities and children's learning during the inspection and undertook a joint observation of children's play. The inspector observed the quality of teaching and the impact this had on children's learning.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
The childminder regularly updates her knowledge and skills in various ways. For example, she shares ideas with other professionals and researches new activity ideas. The childminder reviews her practice and makes improvements that benefit the children. For example, she recently improved the learning environment to make it more stimulating for children and easier for them to access their favourite toys. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder provides children with a safe and secure environment where they can play and learn in safety. She has a thorough understanding of safeguarding procedures and knows what action to take if concerned about the welfare of a child.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder provides a welcoming and exciting environment that helps her to support children's learning and development well. She regularly observes the children, recording their achievements and planning the next steps in their learning. She provides a good mix of planned activities and those that children lead themselves. For example, children enjoy exploring ice and using different tools to break out frozen animals. Children continued their learning in their own play, using water from the melted ice to paint on the floor. The childminder extends children's mathematical skills very well. For instance, she encourages them to compare and count the animals they rescue from the ice.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder gathers detailed information from parents, which she uses to help children to settle quickly and happily into her care. She is a good role model to children, who learn to share and play well together. Children show motivation in their learning and they spend a good length of time engaged in activities. For example, they take their time carefully exploring magnets and the effects they have on different objects. The childminder provides children with regular outdoor play, such as in the very well-resourced garden. Children exercise and build on their physical skills, such as when spinning hoops and pushing cars.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children become very independent and take control of many daily tasks for themselves. For example, they confidently cut up fruit for their own snack and happily dress themselves for outdoor play. Children communicate confidently, discussing their interests and describing their play. They have good mathematical skills and enjoy exploring the world around them. For example, they closely observe spiders in the garden with magnifying glasses. Children show good control with tools and equipment, and are well motivated in their learning. They enjoy listening to stories and are well prepared for their future learning and for school.
