p.1
This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:
Staff do not consistently plan activities throughout the year that support children's ongoing progress. Resources do not always support and enhance children's play experiences or sufficiently challenge them to explore and investigate. Information gained from observations of children's learning is not used effectively to inform the assessment of their achievements in all learning areas. Therefore, planning for what children need to learn next is not always precisely tailored to their needs. Self-evaluation is not fully effective in identifying improvements required to develop the nursery's practice. Staff do not gather as much information as possible from parents about what children know and can already do when they first start to attend.
p.1
It has the following strengths
Staff maintain a safe environment for children. They risk assess all areas of the nursery to identify and minimise any possible hazards. This enables children to play and move around independently and safely. Staff sensitively support children as they move on to other settings or schools. They have good relationships with teachers, who visit children in the nursery environment.

What the setting needs to do to improve further
To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage the provider must:

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2
Inspection activities
The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. The inspector took account of the views of parents spoken to on the day of the inspection. The inspector carried out a joint observation of an activity with the deputy manager. The inspector looked at children's records, the planning documentation, evidence of the suitability of staff working in the nursery and a range of other documentation.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement
The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. Staff are aware of the signs and symptoms of abuse. They know how to report any concerns they may have, in order to protect children. Parents are very positive about the nursery and say that they welcome the ways in which staff share information with them about their children's learning and development. However, staff do not gather enough detailed information from parents about children's skills and abilities before their children start to attend. Therefore, staff are not always able to plan precisely for children's learning from the outset. Self-evaluation does not clearly identify areas for improvement. Regular supervision is carried out, which helps to support the professional development of staff. They are encouraged to access training to build on their knowledge and skills. Recruitment and vetting procedures are effective.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement
During term time, staff plan a range of activities that supports children to make progress in their learning and development. However, at other times, they do not plan activities and are not always perceptive to children's investigations. As a result, children sometimes lack stimulation because they are not inspired to explore and investigate. Although staff carry out observations, they do not always assess children's development in all areas. Children's early reading and language skills are promoted well. Staff share favourite books with them and children choose corresponding soft toys which bring the story to life. For example, children hide the toys in the pretend wood and talk about claws, teeth and knobbly knees. Staff support children's mathematical development as they talk about more and less and pour water into containers.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement
Staff do not always provide children with resources that ignite their curiosity and encourage children to explore and investigate. Staff offer flexible settling-in sessions so that children become familiar with their new surroundings. Children settle well and demonstrate secure and trusting relationships with staff. Children are learning about acceptable behaviour and how to play safely. Staff are good role models and encourage children to be fair and take turns and help them to deal with minor conflicts. They recognise children's efforts and praise them for their achievements, which helps to foster their self-esteem. Children follow routines well and understand good hygiene practices. They learn about healthy lifestyles and food options. Children have daily opportunities to be physically active and benefit from fresh air and exercise.
p.3
Outcomes for children require improvement
Children are not making good enough progress because staff do not rigorously monitor their learning and development. Furthermore, they are not always challenged enough to make the best progress. Nevertheless, children confidently make independent choices and are happy. They learn to socialise and how to make friendships. They are gaining some of the basic skills that prepare them for their future learning.
