This provision is good

 The childminder forms good partnerships with parents, other professionals and early years settings to provide consistency in children's care.  Children enjoy daily opportunities to play outdoors. The childminder offers a range of exciting resources outdoors to extend their interests. For example, children like exploring a mud kitchen, water play and using a climbing frame.  The childminder acts as a good role model and children learn how to behave well. Children enjoy their time with the childminder. They become independent and confident, and make good progress in their learning and development.  The childminder takes positive steps to keep children safe from the risk of harm. For example, there is a range of safety equipment throughout the childminder's home.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not always make the most of opportunities to encourage children to think and respond to questions, to further extend their communication and language skills.  The childminder does not use all opportunities to encourage very young children to explore a range of natural objects, to build on the good resources they enjoy overall.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 give children the time they need to think and respond to questions, to extend their language and communication skills further  build on opportunities for younger children to explore a range of natural and real-life materials, to further support their understanding of the world.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector had a tour of the premises.  The inspector sampled documentation, including the childminder's first aid certificate and public liability insurance.  The inspector observed the childminder during morning activities.  The inspector and childminder discussed the activities and resources she would offer to different age groups of children.  The inspector and the childminder discussed behaviour management for different ages of children.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder fully understands her role and responsibility to protect children from risk or harm and knows who to contact in the event of a concern. The childminder has made good improvements to her practice since registration. For example, she has provided a good range of play activities outdoors to enhance the learning of children who prefer to play outside. The childminder accurately assesses children's development, to identify and close any gaps in their learning. The childminder reflects well on her practice and keeps abreast of changes to legislation. She values the views of parents and uses their suggestions well to further support the continuous improvement of her provision.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder knows the children well and identifies their individual learning styles and next steps needed in learning through ongoing observation and assessment. The childminder helps children to make progress and develop the skills needed for starting school. Good partnerships with parents enable the childminder to share children's progress with parents and involve them in their children's learning. Children learn how to count and recognise numbers indoors and outdoors. For example, they match numbers on an interactive number line outdoors and count indoors as they go upstairs.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder forms good relationships with children, to help them feel secure, develop a positive sense of self and a good sense of belonging. She positively praises children for behaving well and is consistent in her approach. The environment is well organised, child- friendly and welcoming. This gives children opportunities to develop independence and confidence to make choices about what they wish to do or play with. Children enjoy regular trips to the park or the local children's centre as part of being involved in the wider community.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make typical progress in their learning and development from their starting points. They develop the skills they need to prepare them for the next stages in their development and for school. For example, children enjoy using chunky chalks on a large chalk board as they practise their early writing skills. They develop good social skills and know how to behave positively with one another.
