p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 The childminder is not confident about the process to follow if an allegation of abuse is made against herself or a household member.  The childminder has not renewed her paediatric first-aid training in a timely manner and does not hold a current first-aid certificate.  Children do not have enough opportunities to handle and investigate objects, materials and textures as they explore the natural world.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 The childminder has taken steps to address the action set at the last inspection. She has developed her knowledge and understanding of the learning and development requirements to ensure that she is meeting children's learning needs.  Children become confident communicators. The childminder responds well to the babbles and sounds younger children make, actively supporting them to develop their speech and language skills.  The childminder builds friendly relationships with parents. She advises them about the service she provides and keeps them informed about their children's progress. Good partnerships are established with others who provide care and learning for the children.  The childminder supports children's emotional well-being effectively. They are happy and settled in this warm and welcoming childminding setting. They readily go to the childminder for cuddles.  The childminder is good at planning activities that are based around children's next

 support children's developing awareness of the natural world, extending the opportunities for them to use their senses to discover, explore and investigate natural materials.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector spoke with the childminder at appropriate times throughout the inspection.  The inspector looked at records of children's learning and a selection of policies and other records.  The inspector observed a planned activity and jointly evaluated this with the childminder.  The inspector checked evidence of the suitability of household members and qualifications of the childminder.  The inspector took account of written testimonials from parents.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good awareness of the signs and symptoms of abuse and knows how to report concerns. In this respect, children's welfare is protected well. Although she is not confident about the full process to follow if an allegation is made against herself or a household member, the childminder would report to Ofsted to ensure that the regulator is informed. The childminder reflects on the service that she provides to promote a good quality learning experience for children. She has completed a number of online workshops. The childminder has identified training courses that she would like to attend to further improve the quality of children's play and learning experiences. The childminder has not maintained her first-aid certificate. However, she has retained her knowledge of how to manage any minor accidents and injuries.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder knows the children well and talks confidently about how individual children like to play and learn. For example, she knows which children like to watch before having a go and which children like to immediately investigate and explore. The childminder knows where children are in their learning and what she needs to do to support their continuing progress. She responds well to children's short concentration spans and readily changes activities in response to their changing interests. She is actively engaged in the children's play. She is led by what they choose to do as well as providing adult-led activities to further their learning. For example, the childminder plans art and craft activities to promote younger children's exploration of paint and other media. She successfully supports children's enjoyment of the sensory and physical experience of making marks, for example, when using paint.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

Gaps in the childminder's safeguarding knowledge mean that the promotion of children's welfare is not yet good. Despite this, she establishes warm, caring relationships with the children in her care. The childminder discusses children's established routines for sleeping and feeding and follows these. As children get older, the childminder continues to encourage parents to discuss changing routines. This helps to ensure that she continues to work consistently with parents to promote continuity of care. The childminder is a good role model who treats children with positive regard. She effectively builds children's self- esteem and gives meaningful praise for good behaviour and individual efforts. The childminder takes children on outings where they can be active, learn about the local community and also the wider world.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

The childminder assesses children's learning and tracks their progress to ensure that any gaps can be identified and addressed. The childminder helps children build the foundation for future learning, such as when they move on to nursery or school. They develop the necessary skills to help them embrace new experiences with confidence. Children enjoy looking at books with the childminder. She introduces them to numbers, counting with them in routine and play situations.
