This provision is good
The childminder makes the children her priority while they are in her care. Children have warm and secure emotional relationships with the childminder. They are settled and relaxed when at the setting. The childminder creates a welcoming and attractive environment for children. The children enjoy their time outdoors. They have access to a well-presented and interesting range of activities and resources in the garden area. The childminder understands how children learn. She provides a good range of activities that help children to progress well. Documentation is well ordered and easily accessible.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
The childminder does not always complete a thorough enough assessment of children's starting points. This hinders the monitoring of children's progress from when they first attended the setting. Observation and assessment are not consistently used to identify children’s next steps.

What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

further develop the system of assessment, to more consistently identify children’s starting points at an early stage of their attendance continue to increase the use of observation and assessment to clearly identify children’s next steps and use them to inform planning.
p.2
Inspection activities
The inspector observed the childminder's interaction with children. The inspector observed activities in the childminder's home and garden. The inspector had discussions with parents. The inspector looked at children's records, evidence of the suitability of associated adults, and a range of other documentation, including policies and procedures. The inspector looked at the condition and safety of the premises.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
The childminder has sound knowledge of child protection issues and the procedures to follow. The premises are secure and well maintained for children to use. The childminder has procedures in place to keep children safe, such as undertaking regular emergency escape practises. The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder reflects on her professional development. As well as essential training, she completes additional training that is beneficial to her role in childcare. Records and policies are well organised and maintained. This supports the safe and effective management of the setting, for example, a well detailed daily record is given to parents to assist with continuity of care for the children. Parents are very positive about the childminder and comment on the good range of activities available to their children.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder provides a balanced range of indoor and outdoor activities. Children explore the environment and enthusiastically engage with activities where they can experiment and try new ideas. They use bottles, spoons and sieves with the water play to pour and collect. With prompting from the childminder, children begin to recite numbers in sequence, counting each time they pour water from a container. Younger children also use these opportunities as a sensory experience, to observe the feel and look of water and bubbles on their hands. The childminder introduces new activities to children and shows them how the resources can be used. Children observe this and partake in the activity with purpose. Children develop the ability to hold and control mark-making items, such as various sized paint brushes and pencils. The childminder provides a regular and informative narrative for what children are doing. This supports children's language and

understanding, including those who speak English as an additional language.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
Younger children show sustained interest with their play and activities. They play well alongside each other. Children learn about suitable behaviour and behave well. The childminder promptly intervenes to resolve any issues. When feeling reassured, children show the confidence to communicate with visitors to the setting. Children learn about how to keep themselves safe and start to understand concern for their peers. The childminder is caring and attentive and meets the children's personal needs well.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children are working at typical levels of development for their age. They are sometimes achieving above those levels. Children are developing good levels of concentration and social skills that will support their future education. The independence of younger children is sometimes inhibited by childminder doing too much for them, for example, cleaning their hands with wipes before their lunch. Children are interested in their play and learning. They enjoy constructing with connecting blocks and begin to develop understanding of size comparisons, such as 'taller than'.
