Effectiveness of the leadership and management Requires improvement Quality of teaching, learning and assessment Requires improvement Personal development, behaviour and welfare Requires improvement Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 The childminder has failed to supply Ofsted with all the necessary information to check that all adults living at the home are suitable.  Observations, assessments and progress regarding next steps in learning are not always linked to planning to meet individual children's needs.  The childminder does not fully involve parents in their child's learning. She does not gain accurate information from them when children first start to enable her to accurately assess their starting points. In addition, she does not share information to enable parents to support their child's learning at home.  The childminder does not always monitor her assistant's work carefully enough to help ensure engagement with all children.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 Children are happy, settled and behave well. They develop close and trusting relationships with the childminder and her assistant.  Children have plenty of space to play and explore with a variety of resources, both inside and outside.  Children behave well and enjoy each other's company. The childminder and her assistant promote positive behaviour through praise, encouragement and verbal prompts.  Children follow good hygiene routines. They enjoy healthy snacks and anticipate food routines with interest. Children learn to be independent as they feed themselves.  The childminder and her assistant promote children's communication and language development well. This motivates children to develop and extend their vocabulary.

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage and the Childcare Register the provider must:

p.2

Due Date

 provide information to Ofsted of every person aged 16 years or over that lives on the premises where childcare is provided, so that their suitability can be checked 19/09/2016

p.2

Due Date

 improve the quality of planning and assessments to consistently include next steps for children's learning, in order to provide challenge and support their good progress 19/11/2016

p.2

Due Date

 develop further the exchange of information with parents to find out more about what children know and can do when they first start and help parents to continue to support children's learning at home. 19/11/2016

p.2

Due Date

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Due Date

 monitor the assistant's practice carefully to help ensure ongoing engagement with children.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector spoke with children and the childminder at appropriate times throughout the inspection.  The inspector took account of a small sample of the views of parents.  The inspector completed a joint observation with the childminder.  The inspector looked at relevant documentation, such as the childminder's self- evaluation and evidence of the suitability of adults living on the premises.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder and her assistant have a good understanding of current child protection issues, including how to report concerns, in order to help protect children in their care. The childminder has suitability checks for herself and her assistant. However, she has failed to provide Ofsted with the relevant information for other adults over the age of 16 years who live with her, so that suitability checks can be undertaken. The impact of this breach in safeguarding practice is minimised because the adults are not present when the children attend. The childminder updates mandatory training, such as first-aid qualifications. However, she has not yet fully explored ways to develop systems to monitor her assistant's practice to help improve outcomes for children. Parents comment that they are happy with the care given to their children and parental feedback is used to inform evaluations of the provision. The childminder has developed partnership working

with local providers and professionals to support children's welfare.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

The childminder and her assistant do not continually help children to build on their knowledge and experiences. Some general records are completed regarding children's learning. However, the childminder does not always use information gathered from these assessments to plan challenging next steps for children to support their good progress. The outdoor environment is organised to extend children's learning experiences. They enjoy outdoor play, including mark making with chalk and exploring a variety of materials, such as sand and water.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

The childminder and her assistant have formed close relationships with the children in their care. They provide a homely environment for children to explore. Children settle well. However, opportunities to gather information about each child's starting point are not always maximised to establish a clear foundation for children's development. In addition, the childminder has not considered how she will share children's learning with parents to further support them at home. The childminder promotes children's health and they have regular opportunities to be physically active. They have daily access to the outdoors and regularly go on trips in the local area. The childminder encourages children to follow appropriate hygiene routines and discusses with them the importance of washing their hands. Children have a suitable understanding of the rules and boundaries in place and respond well to these. The childminder encourages children to help with daily tasks and

routines, such as tidying away the toys.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Children do not yet make good enough progress because teaching and learning are not targeted to meet their individual needs. Gaps in children's learning are not narrowing quickly enough. Nevertheless, children are happy and settled in the childminder's care. They are developing some of the basic skills they need to support their future learning and the eventual move on to school.
