Effectiveness of the leadership and management Requires improvement Quality of teaching, learning and assessment Requires improvement Personal development, behaviour and welfare Requires improvement Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 The childminder does not plan or assess activities well enough. The most able children are not challenged consistently and progress slows.  Play areas are not well prepared before the children arrive and resources are not organised effectively.  The childminder does not organise information and records as required under the early years foundation stage effectively. Information on children is not consistently completed and evidence to show training has been updated is not always available.  Self-evaluation is in the early stages. The childminder has not clearly identified where improvements can be made.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 Children of all ages are happy and secure. They have a close bond with the childminder and her family. This helps them feel safe and settle with ease. They approach visitors with confidence and take delight in showing them their models made from dough.  The childminder teaches children about similarities and differences. She takes the children to toddler groups and other places of interest on a regular basis. This increases their confidence and social skills as they mix with a wide range of people.  Parents are delighted with the care given to their children. Information is shared on a daily basis. This helps parents to support their children with learning and development at home.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage the provider must:

p.2

Due Date

 improve the quality of teaching so that challenging and enjoyable activities support all children to make good progress across all areas of learning 26/08/2016

p.2

Due Date

 strengthen the systems for assessment so that they are precise and identify where support is needed 26/08/2016

p.2

Due Date

 ensure that the floor in both playrooms is clean and tidy prior to children arriving and that children are able to access a wide range of suitable play equipment. 26/08/2016

p.2

Due Date

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Due Date

 ensure that children's records are fully completed and professional development certificates are available for inspection  ensure that self-evaluation is accurate and helps to improve the quality of provision.

p.2

Inspection activities

 Her Majesty’s Inspector (HMI) looked at a range of documentation including children’s records, records of the progress children have made and evidence of the suitability of any person who lives or works on the premises where childcare is provided.  HMI held meetings with the registered provider, and spoke to children at appropriate times during the inspection.  HMI observed the quality of teaching and its impact on children’s learning.  HMI viewed the room and resources used by children.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement

The childminder does not ensure that the curriculum provides enough challenge to meet the needs of individual children across all the areas of learning. While all children have great fun with the activities, older children are not challenged enough and progress slows. The childminder is in the early stages of reflecting on her practice and identifying how best to use this information to make improvements. Record keeping is inconsistent and some professional development records are not freely available. For example, updated safeguarding training. Safeguarding is effective. Children are safe as the childminder has a reasonable knowledge of the wider aspects of safeguarding which includes recent government legislation.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

Teaching is not consistently strong. The childminder does not plan activities or assess children’s learning and development well enough to ensure that children learn as much as they can. For example, when playing with dough and at snack time the expectations were the same for all children, regardless of age or ability. The childminder uses a range of different assessment documents. These are not always helpful or precise enough to identify where more support is needed. Children enjoy storytime. They follow the story with interest and listen carefully as the childminder changes the tone of her voice to make the story more exciting. Children develop their literacy skills well. They enjoy singing along to action songs and traditional nursery rhymes. Young children who cannot speak as well as others, cleverly put their head down on the carpet to let the childminder know that they want the ‘sleeping bunnies’ song to be next. The childminder willingly obliges.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

The childminder does not make sure that the playrooms are well prepared before the children arrive. For example, crayons and small objects are on the floor from the previous day. Play equipment is mixed together in various containers and not easily identifiable or accessible to children. This hinders children’s ability to be more independent in their learning and development. The childminder provides a wide range of healthy snacks. Children readily identify the different fruits offered and chat constantly as they sit alongside each other enjoying the snack. The childminder uses comforters appropriately when children become tired and fractious.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

The learning and progress of the most able children is not as rapid as it could be. Nonetheless, children are working within the range of development that is typical for their age. Children develop the skills they need ready for their next stage of learning. They are very independent and make a good attempt to put on their waterproof boots in readiness for an outing. Children of all ages make their needs known and are confident in their abilities. They roll and manipulate dough and handle crayons with ease.
