 The childminder has gained an early years qualification since her last inspection. The impact of her accredited training is evident in her good knowledge and understanding of how children learn. She is skilled in promoting children's learning as she plays and talks with them.  The childminder creates a warm and welcoming environment where children play together and also explore independently. Children experience happy and settled relationships with the childminder and her assistant. This helps to build their self- confidence and supports their emotional well-being.  Children have access to a wide range of appropriate activities and experiences. They are motivated and interested in learning and develop a variety of skills as they play together.  The childminder demonstrates a passionate and committed approach to providing a safe and nurturing environment. She actively seeks advice from local authority advisors

and engages with local professional support networks. This helps to support continual improvements to her teaching and raise the outcomes for children.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not always focus on what children need to learn next when she plans activities and experiences.  The childminder occasionally misses opportunities to extend children's thinking and problem-solving skills. For example, she is sometimes too quick to help toddlers when they are investigating new ways of doing things.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 make the most of what is known about individual children so specific areas of development can be targeted for really rapid progress  increase opportunities for toddlers to follow through with their ideas and make links between their thoughts and actions so they can work things out for themselves.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector discussed children's learning with the childminder, following the observation of an activity.  The inspector held discussions with the childminder at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector viewed all areas of the home used for childminding and observed activities, speaking to children at appropriate times while they played.  The inspector looked at children's assessment records, planning documentation and a range of other documentation, including policies and procedures.  The inspector looked at evidence of self-evaluation and took into account the views of parents spoken to on the day.  The inspector checked evidence of the childminder's qualifications and the suitability of adults living and working on the premises.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder has made good improvements since her last inspection. She has a range of policies and procedures in place that helps her to run the provision effectively. The childminder regularly seeks the opinions of parents to help her reflect on and evaluate her practice. She uses this information to improve the quality of her provision. The childminder has developed good professional relationships with other local settings. She knows the importance of working in partnership to promote children's learning. The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder understands her responsibilities with regard to child protection. All adults living and working in her home have completed suitability checks. The childminder ensures that mandatory training is attended by herself and her assistant. She is alert to signs that indicate that children may be at risk of abuse and how to respond appropriately. The childminder guides her assistant's practice when they work

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder has developed effective systems to record children's achievements in their learning and development. She periodically summarises their progress and shares this with parents. This helps parents to continue their children's learning when they return home. Children have interesting and valuable conversations with the childminder and each other. The childminder demonstrates to children as they play with dough. She uses descriptive language and encourages children to repeat familiar words and phrases as they play. The childminder is skilled in adapting activities, so that children of all ages are able to take part. She provides a range of different adhesives and children investigate to find out which ones successfully attach materials together. Toddlers explore media and are encouraged to try new experiences. The childminder chats to them about what they are doing which helps them to begin to make sense of their actions.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children learn how to respect the childminder's home rules. They recognise and respond positively to the daily routine. The childminder chats to them about what is going to happen next. She encourages children to join in with tidying up before moving on to the next activity. This helps to keep children safe and develop an understanding of how to take changes of routine in their stride. Children walk daily to and from school and attend local parks. This ensures they get fresh air and exercise while developing their physical skills. Children are beginning to take care of their personal needs, including appropriate handwashing routines.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

The childminder has a good overview of individual children's needs. Children, including those who receive funded early education, are well supported to make good progress. Children are confident to ask for help when it is needed and demonstrate a 'have a go' attitude to learning. Children are learning how to play cooperatively, share and take turns. They are beginning to develop the skills and knowledge they will need when they are ready to move on to nursery or school.
