This provision is good

 The childminder provides a welcoming and colourful environment with a wide range of toys and activities for children to explore independently. Children are motivated to learn and make good progress in relation to their starting points.  Children learn about healthy lifestyles. For example, they enjoy regular opportunities for fresh air and exercise. In addition, the childminder provides a good range of healthy snacks and foods.  The childminder monitors children's progress effectively to identify their next steps in learning. She shares this information with parents to help them support their children further at home.  The childminder involves the children in managing their own safety. For example, they learn how to cross the road safely during outings and practise the evacuation procedure together. In addition, the childminder teaches them about staying safe in the sun.  The childminder is fully committed to developing her knowledge further. For example,

she completes training and meets with other childminders to gain and share new ideas.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not always fully encourage children to explore technology to extend their understanding of the world, particularly how things work.  Children do not always have opportunities to develop their imaginative and creative skills further.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 develop further the opportunities for children to explore technology in their play, to fully support their understanding of the world  provide further opportunities for children to explore a wider range of materials to extend their creativity and imaginative skills.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the children and childminder interacting together, both indoors and outdoors.  The inspector completed a joint observation with the childminder.  The inspector spoke to the childminder at convenient times during the inspection.  The inspector looked at a sample of paperwork, including written feedback from parents and evidence of the childminder's training and suitability.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder has evaluated her setting well since registration; for example, she has taken advice from other professionals to help her reflect on her practice. She has made several changes to her environment to extend children's experiences. For example, she has provided more activities outdoors, such as visiting local woods to provide children with opportunities to explore and learn about nature. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good understanding of the latest child protection guidance and knows her role and responsibilities to protect children. She knows the process to follow if she has concerns about the safety or welfare of a child.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Children enjoy their play and learning. For example, the childminder provides them with water and sponges to clean the playhouse. She makes good use of opportunities to introduce new words into their play, such as 'magnet' and 'seahorse'. The childminder uses children's interests very successfully to plan further challenging activities. For example, they enjoy the story of the 'Hungry Caterpillar' and then use their hand-to-eye coordination and fingers to thread laces through fruit themed threading cards. The childminder extends their understanding of numbers and shapes well. For example, she uses words such as 'massive' and encourages them to cut their sandwiches into shapes. Children develop good physical skills. For example, they learn to control scooters independently and to hit balls with a bat.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder works closely with parents and other professionals to support children's development. For example, she finds out about their individual backgrounds and their interests at home. In addition, she seeks feedback from other settings that children attend to help support consistency of their care and learning. The childminder is warm and friendly. She knows the children very well and effectively supports their emotional development. For example, she remains at their level during play and offers consistent praise and encouragement. Children behave well and show an understanding of the childminder's routines and boundaries. For instance, they know to take off their shoes indoors and to sit up at the table for meals.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are happy, settled and are familiar with the routines of the setting. They learn important skills to prepare them for their next stage in learning. For example, they use tools to help to prepare their foods at mealtimes and follow good hygiene routines, such as handwashing. Children are confident to ask the childminder for help when needed and make their own play choices. They learn to cooperate and take turns during play.
