Effectiveness of the leadership and management Requires improvement Quality of teaching, learning and assessment Requires improvement Personal development, behaviour and welfare Requires improvement Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 The childminder does not readily identify what children's next steps in learning are. This means there is not a sharp focus on helping young children to extend in the most relevant skills for their age.  The childminder has not yet developed a clear and focused programme for professional development. She does not use all sources available to her to review the quality of care she provides and to bring about ongoing improvement.  The childminder does not always work in partnership with other settings that children attend or have attended. Therefore, starting points for children are not always precise to help build on their prior learning from the very beginning.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 The childminder completes required records and shares these with parents. She makes her policies and procedures available for them to read to help foster positive, professional relationships with each family.  The childminder gets down to the children's level as she plays and interacts with them. She uses lots of language as children play to help extend their vocabulary.  The childminder understands how to manage children's behaviour relevant to their age. She uses simple ways to help children to behave, such as giving them opportunities to make choices and develop house rules.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage the provider must:

p.2

Due Date

 improve assessment and tracking of young children's progress, so that relevant next steps are clearly identified and planning focuses on supporting these areas. 31/10/2016

p.2

Due Date

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Due Date

 develop the arrangements for continued professional development to contribute towards ongoing reviews and improving the quality of care provided for children  strengthen the relationships with other settings that children attend or have attended, in order to help identify clearer starting points and plan more effectively for their learning.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector discussed a planned activity with the childminder.  The inspector held discussions with the childminder and children at suitable times. She looked at relevant documentation, such as the evidence of the suitability of the childminder and household members.  The inspector read and took account of the written feedback provided by parents.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement

Arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has attended some training to help her to understand about keeping children safe in her care. She knows about the signs and symptoms that might cause her concern about children's welfare and how to pass these concerns on to the relevant professionals. The childminder has focused her professional development on mandatory aspects of her work. She has not yet reflected on how she can broaden her knowledge and skills to improve her provision for children. The childminder works closely with parents. They praise the childminder for how their children are content in her care. Relationships with other settings where children attend or have recently attended are less strong and information about learning is not readily exchanged. The childminder gathers relevant information from parents about children and their needs when they start in her care. They continue to share information over time through daily

conversations and by using a communication book.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

Children enjoy activities and they decide where and with what resources they want to play. The childminder plans activities that engage children. For example, together, children and the childminder make bridges and towers from coloured bricks. Children play with dolls and pretend to feed them with imaginary breakfast and bottles of milk. The childminder joins in with this, showing that she values children's ideas. Activities outside of the home are equally as much fun. Children enjoy playing on the local artificial beach where they fill buckets with sand and make sandcastles. The childminder observes children as they play. They are making suitable progress in their learning. However, she does not focus on the most relevant next steps in learning for young children to ensure they experience consistent challenge and make more rapid progress.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

The childminder supervises children well. When carrying out tasks, such as cooking children's tea, she makes sure they are always within sight or heard. The childminder helps children to learn about keeping safe. She reminds them to wear a hat when playing outside in the sun and ensures they learn how to descend the steps in the garden safely. Children settle well and separate from parents with confidence. However, because there is not a sharp focus on children's next steps in learning, their physical development is not fully supported at all times. Suitable activities help children to learn about leading healthy lifestyles. They have regular outings to the park and play areas, enjoying active play outdoors.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Children are not yet making good progress, although, they are gaining some key skills to support their future learning. They explore the activities on offer and move between the house and the garden as they follow their interests. Young children are secure in the childminder's care and are developing communication and language skills to express their wants and needs. They know the routine well and act out the care they receive from the childminder using dolls in their role play.
