This provision is good

 The childminder has developed strong links with other early years settings children attend. She effectively shares information to support continuity in meeting children's care and learning needs. The childminder monitors children's progress carefully to help her support them to gain the skills that prepare them well for moving on to school.  Children are confident speakers. The childminder listens closely to them and provides good opportunities to engage them in conversations and talk about their ideas.  The childminder involves children well in their learning. She plans a stimulating range of experiences that follow children's interests, ideas and learning needs.  Children feel relaxed and comfortable with the caring childminder. They behave well and are confident to ask for help.  The childminder works effectively to improve her practices and regularly evaluates her provision. She is proactive in accessing training, which has helped her to review and

change her home and garden to make it stimulating and interesting.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not always encourage children to do things for themselves or explore their own ideas in creative activities.  On occasion, the childminder does not encourage children to solve problems independently.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

 support children to explore more in their creative activities and do things for themselves  provide more opportunities for children to solve problems.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the childminder's interactions with children as they played in the home and in the garden.  The inspector spoke with the childminder about her knowledge of the early years foundation stage requirements.  The inspector sampled a range of documentation, including policies and procedures, children's assessment records and children's communication books.  The inspector took account of the written views of parents.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder provides a safe and secure environment, which she thoroughly risk assesses. She attends training to embed her knowledge of safeguarding practice, and has a good knowledge of child protection issues and her responsibility to report any safeguarding concerns to appropriate agencies. The childminder evaluates her provision well. She confidently seeks advice and support from other childminders and the local authority early years team to help her improve her practice. She creates accurate action plans to guide further improvement, for example, gaining more information from parents about children's developmental starting points. The childminder seeks the views of parents to help identify further areas to develop and includes them in supporting their children's learning at home.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder provides a broad and balanced range of experiences which complements the activities children engage in at other early years settings and focuses on what they need to learn next. She involves children in evaluating the activities and encourages their thoughts on future learning. Children show great interest in numbers and use mathematical language well. For example, they keenly explain how they have measured the toy fox and comment that they are 'not the tallest'. They describe how heavy they are when weighing themselves on the scales. The childminder provides good opportunities for children to enjoy being creative, for example, painting the eggs they have collected from the chickens the previous day.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children confidently make choices about their play. There is a good range of resources which is easily accessible to the children. There are good opportunities for children to be active and play outside in the well-equipped garden, which provides children with many stimulating opportunities. For example, children are very keen to use the mud kitchen as a science lab and find different plants and fruit to use in their experiments. Children show a good awareness of 'sun safety' and remember to put their hats on when playing outside. Children enjoy helping to prepare their meals with the childminder and learn to use knives safely, for example, to cut the cheese.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are successful and active learners. They engage in interesting and challenging activities that help them achieve well. For example, they confidently use numbers, shapes, sizes and measurements. Children learn to recognise letters and write their names. They socialise well during their games, taking turns and joining in with conversations and discussions. Children make good progress from their starting points.
