p.1
This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:
The childminder does not always plan effectively to ensure that all activities and learning opportunities support young children's development, to help them make good progress, and become successful and active learners. The childminder does not always ensure that parents receive detailed and accurate information about their children's stage of development, to enable them to build on children's learning at home. Similarly, he does not form strong links with other settings that children attend. The childminder does not always encourage children to be imaginative, explore and test their ideas when playing outdoors.
p.1
It has the following strengths
Children have warm and affectionate relationships with the childminder. He provides comfort and reassurance, which helps children to feel settled. They are secure and respond well to the childminder's instructions, helping them to understand expectations for good behaviour. Older children have access to an appropriate range of indoor toys to support their play choices. Overall, children make steady progress in their development. The childminder is aware of his responsibility to keep children safe and carries out daily checks on his home to identify and minimise hazards.

What the setting needs to do to improve further
To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage the provider must:

plan activities and learning opportunities that consistently meet the developmental needs of younger children to help them make good progress. 23/09/2016
p.2
Due Date
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:
p.2
Due Date
strengthen partnerships with parents and other settings that children attend, to develop a regular two-way flow of accurate and detailed information about children's care and learning provide more opportunities for children to explore and investigate, play imaginatively and extend their thinking when playing outside.
p.2
Inspection activities
The inspector viewed the available toys and resources, and the play areas. The inspector observed adult-led activities and children's self-chosen play, indoors and outdoors. The inspector took account of the views of children spoken to on the day, and of parents' feedback from the childminder's questionnaires. The inspector held discussions with the childminder at appropriate times during the inspection. The inspector sampled documentation, including training and qualification certificates, self-evaluation, and accident and medication records.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement
The childminder monitors children's progress and knows what they need to learn next, although he does not always plan effectively to ensure all activities suitably challenge and engage the younger children. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder is clear about child protection issues and knows how to refer concerns about children's welfare to the relevant authorities. The childminder works well with his co-childminder to identify some areas to target to improve their practices; for example, to involve children in future planting activities to help them learn about healthy diets. The childminder uses his knowledge gained from training to build the range of resources, such as using natural items to help children learn to count. The childminder does not engage fully with parents and other settings children attend to work more consistently together.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement
The childminder plans for and supports older children's learning well indoors. However, he does not plan effectively to always meet the learning needs of the younger children. For example, the childminder engaged older children well as they decorated items during a planned craft activity. He gave cuddles and talked to the younger children, but he did not provide them with age-appropriate learning opportunities to explore and investigate, and they lost interest. The childminder engages the older children well to draw and create shapes, and talk about their experiences. He shares information about children's development with parents. However, the information is not always up to date or accurate, and he does not work closely with all other settings children attend to provide children with consistent learning experiences.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement
Children show pride in their achievements and eagerly share their drawings with the childminder, who praises them, building their self-esteem. The childminder forms warm relationships with children. He supports the younger children well, helping them to feel safe and secure, and joins in with older children's play. The childminder does not always support the younger children effectively in their learning. He does not ensure that all children have stimulating and engaging learning experiences outside. The childminder supports children's care needs well, helping them to keep healthy and safe.
p.3
Outcomes for children require improvement
Older children engage in activities that help to prepare them well for school. For example, they are generally confident communicators, develop close friendships with others, and learn to identify letters and numerals. The younger children enjoy the secure attachments they have with the childminder, but they do not always receive the support they need to explore and investigate more during activities based on their own needs and next steps.
