This provision is good
Children make good progress. They are keen and motivated to learn. The childminder provides enjoyable activities that reflect children's learning needs well. The childminder provides a welcoming and relaxed environment. Children build secure relationships with her. This helps them to feel safe and confident to learn and explore. Children behave well and are kind and caring towards one another. They take turns and make friends easily. The childminder teaches children good hygiene rules. She provides them with healthy, nutritionally balanced meals and snacks. She supports their good health and well-being effectively. The childminder reflects on her provision and implements ongoing improvements. She accurately identifies her strengths and areas she wishes to develop to help to improve children's outcomes further.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
The childminder sometimes misses opportunities to encourage children's early understanding of the relationship between letters and the sounds they make. The childminder does not always provide enough opportunities for children to make independent learning choices, particularly for the children who prefer to play and learn outside.
p.1
What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2
Inspection activities
The inspector observed activities inside the home and outside in the garden. The inspector spoke with the childminder and children at appropriate times throughout the inspection. The inspector and the childminder discussed the quality of teaching and its impact on children's learning. The inspector looked at a range of documentation, including children's records, evidence of suitability checks and the childminder's training certificates. The inspector looked at areas of the premises used for childminding.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good knowledge and understanding of child protection procedures and the processes to follow should she have any concerns about a child's welfare. She supervises children well at all times and completes daily checks of the home and garden to minimise potential hazards. The childminder tracks children's progress effectively to ensure that any identified gaps in their learning are narrowing. She has positive partnerships with parents and successfully works with them to meet children's learning and care needs. The childminder develops her teaching practice to support children's learning well, for example, through her own research.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder gathers detailed information from parents and other settings that children attend to help her support children's care and learning. She interacts well with children and provides them with stimulating activities. The childminder extends children's communication and language skills effectively. For example, she encourages discussions and conversations as they play imaginatively with the role play resources. She uses lots of descriptive words and explanations to support children's different levels of understanding. The childminder stimulates children's investigative skills and ability to suggest ideas, for instance, as they experiment with mixing paints to create new colours.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
Children are happy and settled in the childminder's care. She consistently praises children and builds their self-esteem and confidence. Children develop good levels of independence during everyday routines. They help to tidy up and learn to put on protective aprons before painting. They enjoy plenty of opportunities to be physically active, for instance, when they spend time outdoors in the garden and during visits to parks. Children learn about good hygiene routines, such as knowing to wash their hands before they enjoy the healthy snacks. They gain an understanding of people's differences, for example, as they learn about different cultures and engage in discussions about different festivals, which they celebrate.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children develop good skills and attitudes to support their future learning and readiness for school. They enjoy mark making and follow their own ideas when drawing and painting. Children learn to use small tools carefully and with skill, such as when they cut up fruit for their snacks with safety knives. They develop an interest in reading materials as they enjoy listening to stories in the cosy book corner. They learn to count, and recognise numbers and different shapes with confidence. Children develop their understanding of the natural world well, for example, through walks and visits to local gardens.
