This provision is good

 The childminder has made significant changes to her practice and provision since her last inspection. She is fully aware of the need to ensure that all adults who live in the house are thoroughly vetted. This helps to ensure that children remain safe.  The truly dedicated childminder values all children and welcomes them into a homely and inclusive environment. She is responsive to children's needs, offering comfort, support and reassurance at times when children need it. This helps to foster their emotional well-being so that they are happy, settled and assured at all times.  The knowledgeable childminder knows how to use the information from her accurate observations and assessments to plan activities that build on what children already know. This contributes towards all children making good progress in their learning.  The childminder uses a good range of effective strategies to keep parents informed of

their children's learning and progress. She welcomes parents to share children's achievements from home and to contribute ideas for future learning. This helps to form a strong partnership where continuity of care and learning is carefully considered.  The childminder acts as a good role model for behaviour. She places a huge emphasis on positively praising children for their good work. She continually promotes sharing and taking turns and uses a calm and sensitive approach when tackling any instances of unwanted behaviour. This helps children to adopt a culture of respect and tolerance.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 At times, the childminder does not have high enough expectations of children's readiness to manage their health and self-care routines more independently.  The childminder does not provide enough opportunities for children to discuss similarities and differences to enhance their understanding of simple concepts.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 raise expectations of children's abilities and enhance their developing health and self- care skills to the highest levels  provide more opportunities for children to observe similarities and differences during play and enhance their awareness of simple mathematical concepts, such as size.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector had a tour of the areas used for childminding.  The inspector observed children during their freely chosen and routine activities both indoors and outside.  The inspector held discussions with the childminder and children throughout the inspection.  The inspector examined a range of documents. These included evidence of suitability, a record of the childminder's qualifications and training, self-evaluation documents, policies and procedures, health and safety records and children's observation and assessment files.  The inspector conducted a joint observation with the childminder during a planned activity.  The inspector took account of the views of parents from comments noted on the provider's recent feedback forms.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has a good knowledge of the procedures to follow to protect a child's welfare. Safety systems are robust. Well- organised play areas, close supervision and secure areas help to ensure that children remain safe in the childminder's care. Effective tracking contributes towards ensuring that any gaps in children's learning are swiftly identified and supported. The well-qualified childminder is committed to improving her knowledge and skills. Her attendance at training, meetings with other childminders to share good practice ideas and continued research are very clearly focused on improving her practice and provision. She values the feedback she receives from children and parents and uses this to drive improvement.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Activities are challenging and fun. Children make their own choices when taking part in exciting activities, such as making pizzas. The childminder asks a good range of questions and encourages children to reflect on their own experiences to promote their communication and language skills. Children respond well to this. They are keen to reflect on the breadth of their own experiences, talking through the process of how a pizza is made. Children freely explore creative materials, such as dough. They use tools for a purpose to manipulate materials to create a desired effect. Children's learning from other settings is complemented well. For example, the childminder enhances her play areas with a good range of bug exploration equipment to link in with recent themes from school.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder forms secure emotional attachments with children. The continued encouragement and praise that children receive help them to develop high levels of self- esteem and self-confidence. Children are valued. Their work and creations are displayed around the childminder's home to help them develop a sense of pride in their achievements. The childminder provides a good range of experiences to promote children's good health. For example, children show increased skill when moving in a variety of ways on the trampoline. They enjoy their walks out into the local community, such as when visiting the woods to observe aspects of their natural world. The childminder has good links with other settings. She takes children for visits to school ahead of their move. This contributes towards transitions being supported and seamless.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

All children make good progress in their learning and development. Younger children are assured, showing the confidence to explore their environments independently and freely. They demonstrate friendly and welcoming behaviour and seek out others to share experiences. Older children are motivated and enthusiastic learners who are confident to make their own choices. They are keen to take a leading role in their play, showing a good ability to direct their own learning. Children are sociable. Their attendance at different social groups helps them to adopt the ability to make new relationships easily. Children show care and respect for one another and readily attempt to resolve their own conflicts. This prepares children well for their next stages in learning, including school.
